Brilliant special effects and animatronics aside, is Jurassic Park really that good? I loved it as a kid. But on reflection the story isn't anything too gripping. The characters are very bland except the odd few moments with Jeff Goldblum.

To this day, still one of the greatest experiences I ever had at a movie theater. Before Jurassic Park, there was nothing that looked quite like that on the big screen. A major accomplishment in film, regardless of whether the story was great or not.
Not overrated in the least.

Compare the recent monsters movies lads today like the Godzilla films or Pacific Rim or The Meg to Jurassic Park. It makes you realize how good it really is

I don't think it's a masterpiece or one of the best movies ever made, and it's not without flaws (T-Rex magically appearing in the visitors center), but on the whole it's pretty good.

Honestly depending on how seriously bored I am may switch it on when it's on TV as background noise but the days of being amazed by Jurassic Park is well and truly over. Ian Malcolm is the only best character in it but Alan is harmless enough.

Not at all .. it's still amazing that they could make all those critturs so real and that they had the sense to hire TWO kids who were not in the least cringeworthy.
The kids in the sequels, however, needed to be eaten asap.

Just because a few people don't like a film... Doesn't make it overrated...
Which it isn't...
It's still a great film.

No.
I think it’s one of the rare films that is exactly where it should be. Not underrated or overrated.
Think about all the monster movies over the decades. It’s amazing how good it really is.
“Titanic” is underrated because people overrated it initially and it got a backlash of undeserved hate.
“Avatar” is the same story.
“Star Wars VII” was overrated and overhyped.
Those are examples of films either being overrated or underrated.

Yes. I lost interest in it unlike spielberg's other monster feature Jaws which just gets better and better with age. JP would be as good as Jaws if they had no CGI and had to focus on atmosphere & suspense over sfx set pieces & dumb screaming kids.

It’s not exactly overly praised except for a couple of iconic scenes and a Ian Malcolm meme.

Fun to watch once....but that's it.
Jeff Goldblum questioning the ethics of the thing - about a 2 minute scene - is the only bit that holds up.

Nope, name another dinosaur movie that even comes close to being as good.

Not overrated. No one gushes over it like Star Wars or E.T. Sure it's the unofficial start of mass CGI effects, & so be it.

It is one of the best examples of high-caliber blockbuster filmmaking. The technical craft of the movie is astounding. The characters are more than just something to look at while the story moves along. Alan Grant's character arc is very effective imo. All of the actors play their parts perfectly and each adds something unique to the movie. We are rooting for all the main characters to survive and when certain characters get killed off, it actually has an emotional impact. The movie understands how to build suspense and fear and also perfectly portrays a sense of wonder and amazement. It does this very carefully and with a lot of thought put into every moment.

Is the greatest film of 1993 overrated?
A masterpiece of suspense with memorable characters, a novel and exciting plot and setting, a boundless sense of wonder and what is likely John Williams' finest soundtrack?
Absolutely, positively not.

I don't think so.
But it was the first movie I saw in theaters so it will always be special for me.
I will say this as much as I like the film, I think the book is better and I wish there was a mini series that was more faithful to the story Michael Crichton wrote.

I saw it as an adult and was entertained enough even though it was flawed. I also enjoy the sequels so perhaps my taste control is set to the correct level for these films.

I don’t think so.
It’s so easy to watch. There’s almost nothing slowing the story down the entire time. If it does have a flaw I could see it being the Deus Ex TRex ending.

True, but as nearly perfect as this film is, the ending is kind of awesome. It’s better than some convoluted ending that weighs down the dramatic pacing.
