Let's pretend you were the one in-charge of developing the sequel trilogy. You were required to make sure the main protagonist was a strong, female lead. Who would you have cast in the role and what changes would you have made to the character compared to what we got with Rey?

Thereβs nothing wrong with Daisy Ridley in the role. If you say so... She gets the job done. Sheβs not unconvincing in the role. Out of all the problems with the sequel trilogy, the actors have never really been considered one of them.

I don't mind Daisy Ridley as Rey. She wasn't the problem in the new trilogy.

If they could give the role to a young Meryl Streep, it still wouldn't fix the writing.

Thereβs nothing wrong with Daisy Ridley in the role. I agree. She's been one of the highlights for the sequel trilogy. Ridley is a decent enough actress but she's not exactly stellar either. I mean, do you mean to tell me you can't think of any actress out there who could have done a better job with her role?

I can think of alternative choices perhaps but if they'd been better, I cannot say. What do you find that's been lacking from Ridley?

Do they really need an Oscar caliber actress for that?

I can think of alternative choices perhaps but if they'd been better, I cannot say. What do you find that's been lacking from Ridley? Gravitas. Charisma. Depth. Her Rey was serviceably good but failed to make it a truly magnetic character that got audiences to gravitate towards her. Compare that to someone like Chadwick Boseman who, even having only limited screentime and lines in Civil War, was able to make T'Challa a very magnetic character. Actresses like Emily Blunt or even Blake Lively can dominate the screen as soon as they walk into a room... that's a trait you usually want to have with your leading actor/actress. Again, I'm not trying to harp on Ridley. Just saying there's definitely room for improvement... which is what this thread is about.

I mean, do you mean to tell me you can't think of any actress out there who could have done a better job with her role? What's acting have to do with it? Mark Hamill's acting in A New Hope was atrocious. It was so bad that it made the mediocre acting by the other 2 leads look decent. But it didn't matter. To quote Harrison Ford, "It's not that kind of movie kid."
And this is coming from a huge fan of A New Hope.
Daisy Ridley works perfectly well in the role.

I'd cast someone who's a female equivelent of john wayne.
Go ahead and tell me on paper that doesn't sound like a great idea.
