So I rented the Blu Ray of Tenet from Redbox yesterday. Alright I realize Im going to get crap for this but I did not like the newest Nolan film. I tried, I really tried but I seriously could not get into this. I heard it was ultra complex but damn I was seriously confused. And yes I fully paid attention. There was nothing I really cared about. I felt the lead (Protagonist) was dull as hell and the backwards fights looked silly. Plus the film kept on changing aspect ratios like every other scene. And I noticed others were also talking about how the score overlaps the dialog.
Sad to say its one of my least favorite of last year. 2/10
Did you all like it?

The aspect ratio thing is common for Nolan films as he often shoots in IMAX. I’ve seen it three times thus far. Still baffling but I don’t hate it. It does seem to try way too hard to be smart and sometimes comes as someone doing a parody of Nolan films. A step down from the masterful Dunkirk. 6/10 but will likely revisit it again.

Confusing, convoluted, unique, interesting and very entertaining. I understood it a bit more the second time.
8/10

I have heard that but this is the first time I really noticed it. I have yet to see Dunkirk.

You have to have already liked it the first time. I don't need to understand a movie in order to be a fan of it.

I was never bothered by the changing aspect ratios. Nolan chooses to shoot entire sequences in IMAX and other scenes in anamorphic widescreen. It's unlike Transformers: The Last Knight with the aspect ratio changing every five seconds.
That said, the idea of reverse entropy and time inversion are interesting concepts, and it's entertaining yet confusing. You will probably understand the details more in subsequent viewings. The Protagonist is a blank slate character. John David Washington tries to inject a little personality here and there, but his character still feels dull. I liked Robert Pattinson as Neil. The dialogue is heavily expositional and makes the characters feel less human. I am still enthralled by the action sequences and the visual effects, though.

The only Nolan movie that I hate.
It sets up some very clever concepts/gimmicks that it never really explores or explains. It promises to be a smart sci if movie and then commits to being a really (intentionally?) dumb spy/action movie.

I liked it, but didn't love it. Yeah, I was confused, I felt like inversion wasn't fleshed out very well. I bought it though, so I'm going to watch it a few more times to see if something clicks.
It was ambitious, the cinematography was awesome, and so was the action. Nolan is never lazy, even if he misses the mark. I loved John David Washington, I'm excited to see where he goes from here.

I THINK I liked it. I found it confusing though, but I never found it boring. Just wished I knew what was going on.

I don't want to encourage anyone to risk their lives. The only reason why I saw TENET is because the cinema I went to had the proper safety measures and because I live in Rome, where the COVID-19 cases aren't as high as other places (at least at the time). If your situation is similar to mine, that's a whole other conversation. Now, the plot revolves around a secret mission. So secret that, a couple of times, the agents and the employers discuss it in public, including a ferry where they're surrounded by people. Wait, what? Like most of Christopher Nolan's works, we have a complicated plot involving a lot of real science and philosophy in our hands. Unfortunately, there's something missing that was present in his previous projects: Strong emotions that drive the main characters through their journey (a husband trying to kill his wife's murderer, a father who misses his son and daughter, a father who misses his daughter and I guess his son too, etc...). Here, we learn nothing about our hero. And don't tell me that's the point, like in DUNKIRK. That was because the soldiers served as vessels for the viewers to insert ourselves into, in order to feel what it's like to be in a war zone. Not to mention that 2017 hit was designed to be a complete visual and auditory experience. This one balances the images and the audio the same way most movies do, and the protagonist is presented as a real person. Without knowing what motivates him on a personal level (instead of just wanting to save the world), I couldn't connect with him and, by extension, with the movie. Also, he and a lot of the other characters are similar in terms of personality, whether they're displaying their inner strength, their intelligence or their sense of humor, so they don't stand out, unlike INCEPTION with its group of distinct individuals. Speaking of that 2010 classic, it didn't matter that the events were written as a traditional heist film, because they took place inside people's dreams. All kinds of unpredictable and imaginative things happened in each environment. Here, a special element is introduced early on, but it's not used to the fullest until the 2nd half. The 1st half is a traditional spy film (and not a very interesting one) that occasionally turns into science fiction. It would be easy to dismiss Jennifer Lame's editing as choppy. I mean, I can't remember a shot lasting more than 5 or even 2 seconds (to be fair, I wasn't actually timing them). There are even moments where a character is doing something and in the very next shot they're doing something else in another part of the room, indicating that at least a couple of seconds have passed. However, that and the near total lack of establishing shots makes me think that her hands were tied and she was just doing her best to reduce the running time down to 150 minutes. Honestly, I would've preferred it if she had deleted full scenes. Trust me: Not all of them were indispensable. No other aspect about this production is bad at all, but without something to get invested in, what's the point? 5/10 ------------------------------------- You can read comments of other movies in my blog.

It was highly entertaining but I have issues with some of the action. The final scene everyone is wearing a mask and I had trouble understanding who is who.
I liked it, but far from being Nolan's best work.

I enjoyed it as I've enjoyed all of Nolan's films. It's not his best work, but it was an enjoyable ride with a very unique premise that Nolan translated wonderfully to the screen.

Watched last night...a few things perplexed me but I enjoyed it overall. I’m hoping it all becomes more clear on a second watch.

I didn't hate but I didn't really enjoy it. Slick but unsatisfying. Great action scenes and a good hammy performance by Kenneth Branagh. 5/10.

I liked how that one woman was taller than everyone else.
5/10 too loud in the cinema.
