One of the perks of working abroad is that not only do you get to watch movies before they open in the US but if you¡re lucky enough you get to watch a pre-release.
I have to say that I abstained myself from being spoiled for this one and I will extend to you the same courtesy as I give my review.
This movie in my opinion was outstanding, it is much better than Prometheus, and it follows the events of that movie in a flawless way. I think it has a great way to combine both stories to serve as a prequel to "Alien", tho I would not be surprised if there's a third entry of this saga.
The formula of the Alien franchise is almost the same when it comes to someone believing to be a god and using the xenomorphs to prove it, and that is all I will say about the plot.
As for the story line I think it was well thought and developed, the characters led by Katherine Waterstone, Billy Crudup, Michael Fassbender, were charismatic and endearing. It is hard to make you care about characters in a horror movie since you know some of them will die but I think the script and the actors created something really good here, As for the pacing it was much better than the previous entry and the special effects were truly amazing. You can really feel the touch of director Ridley Scott thru the screen.
I will say tho that some story lines do not align themselves well with the "Alien v Predator" series, which is supposed to serve as prequels to Prometheus and Alien: Covenant. There were serious inconsistencies with those movies the last time around and I really wished they had resolved them in this one, and to be honest not only did they not resolve those inconsistencies but they made them worse by adding some plots that pretty much negated the existence or relevance of the "Alien v Predator" franchise.
All things considered I give Alien: Covenant an 8 out of 10, possibly one of the best entries in the entire franchise.

Sounds great! i don't really care about AVP, so some inconsistencies with that won't bother me

on a side note, how was McBride in this?

I wish that Prometheus had shown the exact scenes of the time that the first Alien hearkens back to with the attempted escape by that giant pilot.

Your review has increased my excitement for this movie. Especially your description of this movie as a well done horror flick. As for AVP, I never saw those, so I don't really care if there is an inconsistency.

As for AVP, they were both garbage, so I don't really care if there is an inconsistency. Your sentiments about it echo my own ashverses, just thought I'd tailor your comment from my perspective though.

...I will say tho that some story lines do not align themselves well with the "Alien v Predator" series... The AVP movies don't exist. They might have existed if either of them were remotely good, but they're not, so they don't exist. As a matter of fact, whats AVP?
Wait, let me re-phrase that... the AVP comics DO exist. Especially the first one, which is what they should have based the movie on.

This review smacks of either shilling or simply a poor taste in film.
Every review I've seen at IMDb is either "outstanding" or "garbage" -- the telltale sign of a crappy film. That is, those that disliked it, said it was somehow worse than Prometheus (⚠), while those that were effusive, still tempered their review by stating it wan't "quite" as good" as Prometheus.... (⚠ ⚠ ⚠)
I'll likely still go see it, as I hardly attend the cinema any longer and don't plan to until the Star Wars [schlock] lands. But I will be back to either confirm or retract my presumption that this film is another Scott schlock... abject schlock.

Although I disagree with pacing, story and to some extent special effects. I don't think this follows as well as it could have from Prometheus. Too many things unanswered with where Prometheus ends to where Alien:Covenant begins with David. For me the story was'nt fleshed out to its potential and it telegraphed before key things happened. Will discuss further when more people have seen it hard to explain without getting into spoilers.

This film was very bad in my opinion. Basically a remake of Alien, with all the crap religious subtext from Prometheus thrown in, as well as the Aliens ending shoved in the middle. There is no suspense or build up. We are supposed to care about these characters just because they are all married?? I couldn't even remember one characters name. All the alien killings are just gore for the sake of it, nothing artistic about it. As for Fassbender's conversations with himself, it was like listening to nails on a chalkboard. The themes of artificial intelligence were done so much better in Blade Runner. Overall very boring and predictable.

I really badly wanted to like this film. I wasn't able to on any level.
A few bits of it were average. The rest ranged from below average to really terrible.
Overall, amongst the worst entries in the franchise. Down there with Prometheus... possibly even worse.

Really enjoyed this film. I was afraid it was going to be a rehash of Alien by following the same tropes of the usual horror/slasher clichés for 2 hours. But it provided enough originality in the screenplay for it to be entertaining and unpredictable for the most part. I didnt really care for any of the human characters but the dialogue and scene interactions of Michael Fassbender I found fascinating and made up for the lack of memorable crew members. The ending was somewhat predictable but still satisfying nonetheless. I found the 2nd act the most enjoyable, the manner in which they explain the backstory from Prometheus and expand on the mythos and lore of the Alien franchise is intriguing. I give this 8.5/10 I would definitely watch it again as there are many things that would be clearer on 2nd viewing

Having seen it now, the verdict is...
A-B-S-O-L-U-T-E GARBAGE!
(Thank 'David' that Scott is not directing Blade Runner 2049...)

Just saw it yesterday. It was ok. In a way it was better than Prometheus because it had a bit less of the "who am i/who are we/who are they/what day is it" pondering, but still TOO MUCH for an Alien franchise. To me, the real beauty of the first 3 movies was that it was a simple well crafted and fun sci-fi action/slasher that didnt try to be anything other than that AND on top of that had a really unique and strong main character.
Unlike this one. Which has the too many of those "who am i/who are we/who are they/what day is it" scenes that I found boring/pretentious and off genre, and it has a fragile looking and uninteresting heroine. I like Waterston as an actress and she did a fine job acting here, but I just didn't see her as a credible respectable strong character - something I had no trouble seeing Ripley as.
Also there were too many women and too much crying. I am all for gender equality, but do you really do us women good when the roles you give us consist mostly of crying, hysterical whining, running around in panic, or having sex scenes in the shower? Bring back Ripley-like qualities!
I even found myself missing Dr Elizabeth Shaw throughout Alien: Covenant. And let me tell ya, I did not see that coming. But just take the DIY Cesarian from Prometheus vs how Daniels (Waterston) does ANYTHING in A:C (often while tearing up) and you'll know what I mean.
I gave it 66%, because the acting was good, the cinematography of Dariusz Walski is always magnificent and heck, it has Kenny Powers in it and he rocks.
