NB in your analysis above only YOUNG BESS is an A list choice - the other two titles belong on list B.. Remember list A far more select - only 3 more additional names plus Sybil Thorndike could be added to the original 5. List B could be expanded to include Ava again plus Rita Hayworth, Janet Leigh, Jean Seberg, Jane Greer, Edith Evans (twice), Flora Robson (twice) Kay Walsh, Sheree North, Thelma Ritter, Jean Kent, Sharon Tate, Gladys Cooper, Kathleen Byron (twice)and Diane Cilento.

The actresses of list A played leading roles opposite Deborah Kerr, Wendy Hiller in Major Barbara and Jean Simmons in Young Bess.
List B - These actresses played supporting roles, whereas Deborah Kerr was the leading actress. (Wendy Hiller in Separate Tables, Jean Simmons in T he Grass is Greener, Black Narcissus and Perfect Strangers)YEAH - more or less right - although I'd say Kerr was not "supporting" Garson in the Shakespeare - despite billing Kerr probably had more screen time, but the boys got the big parts in that one - The answer I was looking for was .....all the actresses on list A got billed above Deborah Kerr on the film's opening credits on their films together... the ones on list B got billed below her ... so it probably quicker just to say list B is a list of her co-stars and list A a list where she WAS the co-star. She was a major star for 30 years so the list of actresses who bested her in billing was very limited and typically at the beginning or end of the run (Thorndike, Hiller, Dunaway). Aside from the examples mentioned she was technically billed Below Ursula Andress, Joanna Pettet & Daliah Lavi in CASINO ROYALE.. the 8th billed name but top of the "guest stars" Re Ava in THE HUCKSTERS Kerr was star billed with Gable.. Gardner I think 6th billed.... By the time they made IGUANA 17 years later Ava was aa bigger name. YOUNG BESS was bought for Kerr but she wasn't doing as well as expected and Metro, losing interest, demoted her to playing Catherine Parr (I think) and got newbie Jean Simmons for the star spot. Luckily for Kerr (and us) she landed the ETERNITY gig next up and made a great comeback and a few years later commanded top billing over all the other stars in SEPARATE TABLES, including Wendy Hilller (I'm talking about the opening credits on the film - Hayworth is top billed in many posters). She enjoyed a 10 year run (54-63) where she was the top billed female in everything she made and never slipped below second billing. Well done!
