A Statement from Catholic Bishops on Protecting LGBT Youth: "(W)e stand with you and oppose any form of violence, bullying or harassment directed at you." tylerclementi.org/catholicbishopsstatement/Or does it ring hollow since the Bishops also regard them as “intrinsically disordered”, and are not opposed to state discrimination against them (like opposition to same-sex marriage)?

In this neck of the woods the same thing is happening. There is a HUGE (also YUGE) controversay about Margaret Court, possibly our greatest women tennis player, being given an additiona( promotion) to the highest honour in our country. She is a loud and proud evangelical critic of gay and LBGT people, causing much harm and disharmny in Australian society. www.abc.net.au/news/2021-01-22/margaret-court-responds-to-australia-day-honour-backlash/13083578in part [/b][/quote]

Margaret Court is very much the villain of the piece.

She claims to love people yet she condemns them in the same breath!

This is a hard one.
I know that people can see it as a sin and oppose same-sex marriage, but also not agree with bullying and violence against LGBQ people. It's a good start.
I have family members that think this way and I know they are being genuine, it is just that they can't reconcile things in their mind.
People are very complex and not very good thinkers in general and I think this gets overlooked a lot of times.
I have my own struggles with many of my own opinions and sometimes it is an irrational response that is hard (even impossible) to get past.

IF you cannot reconcile this in your mind, you have to be VERY careful that your opinions are based on facts and NOT misapprehensions, like the opionions of Margaret Court that are quoted above. IF you know that gay people are born that way and have NO choice, then it is an easy step to accept and in fact non-Christian NOT to. It is a fact that gay people don't 'choose' their sexuality.

You are missing the nuances of psychology. I am talking when you have been convinced of the wrong thing for so many years, that your mind fights hard against new information. Even if it is correct. Some people will find the new information easier to take in than others, some will go into denial, some will flat out reject it as a lie or a conspiracy and some just have a faulty brain. Part of this is because what this means is that they have been lied to by people they have trusted for much of their life. There are people who will even consider suicide due to this and the brain does what it needs to in order to preserve itself. Now religious people rejects it because it goes against what they believe God wants based on their interpretation of the Bible. If they believe the Bible/God is opposed then they will stand against it in some way. The Bible does clearly stand in opposition to the LGBQ community.

I DO understand, otherwise how would so many otherwise sensible Americans vote for Trump and still be supporting him.....however does it really? Surely it is only the individual interpretation of certain groups studying the Bible that says this? It is a proble that every society has to fac however it has been worrying that over the last couple of decades that anti-intellectualism has taken over Ameerican society. IMHO

IMHO Man shall not lay with man as he does with woman, for it is an abomination. (this one in particular seems to be the nail in the coffin) Every reference to marriage is between a man and a woman. God created Adam and Eve as the first 2 humans. The main goal is to have children. You are to marry and multiply. Of course there will be different interpretations, but some stuff is just obvious imo. One thing is for certain, the Bible is against trans people. God made man as man and woman as woman and the man is the head of the system. If a woman can become a man, then these verses lose their meaning. The Bible needs to be done away with and so does religion. The Bible is a fucking mess.

As Bishops, they are presumed to endorse the official position of the Catholic Church.

As Bishops, they are presumed to endorse the official position of the Catholic Church. In theory, but not necessarily the case. I dunno about bishops, but I have certainly come across priests who go against official church position. There's a Catholic priest in Belfast who is a pro-choice campaigner for instance.

So that priest explicitly puts himself in conflict with the Church's position. But the bishops, in their statement, do not. If they want us to think they disagree with the Church they have to say so. Otherwise, the only reasonable presumption is that they endorse the Church's view.
