www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z4MN3XnqhQU&t=11sWatching the two recently again, and I'm not saying Aliens is better (the two films complement each other very well) but I think Aliens has a lot to offer but gets an unfair amount of hate recently.

Actually, I find that Aliens (1986) has the look and feel of an 80s action flick. It's very much a product of its era.
Alien (1979), on the other hand, looks and feels like a genuinely timeless film. OK - some of the computer systems look dated, but other than that the movie has aged extremely well.

Actually find it to be the opposite way around.

It depends on what you mean by "holds up." ALIENS primes emotions more like today's films do than ALIEN does, so in that sense, ALIENS is less dated. On the other hand, ALIENS has a look to it that feels "from the ''80s, whereas ALIEN feels less '70s, making it less dated.
In my opinion, both are excellent films. And whether one feels more of it's time than the other doesn't matter to me. I like them both.
The datedness of all films can be mitigated by spending more time watching other films in its era. After a while, the film won't seem so odd.

You can blame Cameron acting like a dick for the hate Aliens has been getting lately.

I think the first has aged much better actually. As was said Aliens is more of an 80s actioner. I love both films but I find Alien much better.
