February 4, 2001, at 5:30 pm the body of Sun-hee Kim, a 21 year-old female college student, was found by a hiker on Baesan Mountain in Yeonje-dong, Yeonje District, Busan, South Korea. Her body was found approximately 30 meters from the entrance of a popular hiking trail, and she had been stabbed in the neck and stomach.
When an autopsy was conducted, coroners found that Sun-hee most likely died in the early morning hours of February 4th. The cause of death was determined to be shock caused by excessive bleeding, and the fatal wound was the stab to her abdomen. It was also determined that the killer watched her agonize and succumb to her first stab wound before stabbing her in the neck. Upon investigation, Sun-hee was found to have no sign of sexual assault or defense wounds. The investigators noted that it was incredibly odd that Sun-hee had no defense wounds which most likely means that she was caught off guard. Additionally, the location where her body was found was a heavily forested part of the mountain so it was impossible for anyone to hear her scream.
The police came to the conclusion that Sun-hee left her home between the hours of 5 a.m. after her mother left for a day-trip and 7:30 a.m. when her 14 year-old brother woke up for school. She was wearing sweatpants, a coat, and low-heeled shoes, not sneakers. Because of the random nature of the clothing she was wearing, it was determined that she was only leaving for a brief amount of time and would return soon. Additionally, her mobile phone and wallet were left behind at her family's apartment. Investigators also combed through Sun-hee's phone records the day she was murdered and found she placed nor received any calls or text messages.
Because of the ordinary lifestyle she led, police had a hard time coming up with a list of suspects that would want to hurt her. At the time of her death, Sun-hee was attending Pukyong National University where she was studying Statistics. She was also the vice-president of the schools literature association. The police interviewed her friends, members of the school clubs she joined, nearby residents, and her ex-boyfriend. However, majority of the people interviewed had an alibi as most were at home sleeping the morning of her murder.
The police also investigated Sun-hee's family and conducted a luminol test inside of her home to ensure that she was not murdered there and moved to the mountain. They also took samples of the grass on her shoes to determine that she was murdered in the same area her body was found, but the test was inconclusive. The area was frequented by hikers but the morning of Sun-hee's murder there were no hikers in the area. Also during the time period when the murder occurred CCTV's were not yet popular. In the end, the area where Sun-hee was killed was redeveloped and many of the people in the area were forced to move away. As a result of a lack of leads the case grew cold and remains unsolved to this day.
**My theory**
In the days leading up to her murder, it was said by her family that Sun-hee had become increasingly withdrawn. She told her friends that her ex-boyfriend was stalking her, and had sent her a text that read, "Even if you die, will you not regret breaking up with me?"...In my opinion this event would scream he was guilty, but conveniently the day of the murder he was a wedding party member in a wedding in Seoul. It would have been basically impossible for him to travel the 4 hours to Busan, commit the murder, and then return back to the capital. The popular Korean TV show known as, "We Want to Know It" brought in a hypnotist to hypnotize Sun-hee's little brother in hopes that he was be able to reveal a clue about the day Sun-hee was murdered. He recalls hearing a knock at the door and Sun-hee getting up to answer it, and that he heard a woman's voice speaking to her when she opened it. Investigators pointed out that the suspect may be a female, because the angle of the stab wounds indicate that the killer was between 150-160 cm tall.. Considering that most Korean males are on the taller side it was very unlikely that the killer was male. It is assumed that if the police had considered both sexes as a possible suspect the killer could have been found sooner.
Because of Sun-hee's popularity and likable appearance it has been thought that the killer was a jealous female classmate who resented her for being well-liked. It is possible that the suspect is someone who exhibits sociopathic like behavior and is able to hide their true character behind a soft and easy-going demeanor. My theory is that the killer may have been watching Sun-hee for awhile and knew that her parents typically were not home in the morning hours. It is possible that the day of the murder the killer waited for hours until they felt the time was right to call her out. Because of the clothing she was wearing, the suspect is definitely someone she was familiar with due to the fact that she did not attempt to enhance her appearance. It is also possible that someone may have witnessed Sun-hee and her killer but may have not known due to their causal body language. The police investigation was a definitely a bit sloppy and they should have looked into a possible love triangle. I feel as if there was possibly someone who wanted the affection of Sun-hee's ex-boyfriend and killed her for it. There is also the possibility that her ex-boyfriend solicited the help of a female to carry out the murder for him. What do you guys think?
