Do you guys remember The Oscars wanting to introduce a new category called "Outstanding Achievement in Popular Film" which was really done just so it could reward a movie that did well at the box office? The Oscars dropped the category after backlash and also got backlash from various actors, directors, etc. for wanting to drop categories like Best Cinematographer, Best Editing, etc. in an effort to boost ratings and cut run time. www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/academy-postponing-new-popular-oscar-category-1140423

It was such a transparently dumb idea for an award.

I haven't seen too many of the Best Picture nominees. Only four, Chicago 7, Nomadland, Sound of Metal and Mank. To be honest, I really didn't care for Nomadland too much. I need to watch it again, but, based on the first viewing, yawn. None of them really knocked my socks off. I really didn't give a damn for Parasite last year, so maybe I'm two for two. I don't know if that's ever happened with me and BP winners, unless there were two winners that were musicals.

In Memoriaum segment - way too fast with an upbeat song choice.

Ouch. Oscars 2021 ratings plummet to all-time low "Viewership reached an all-time low, according to reports, with the 2021 show averaging only 9.85 million people per Nielsen's Live + Same Day preliminary national numbers. That's a 58 percent decline from the 2020 Oscars, which drew 23.64 million viewers and previously held the record for worst ratings in the show's history." www.yahoo.com/entertainment/oscars-2021-ratings-tank-all-time-low-190520345.html

In Memoriaum segment - way too fast with an upbeat song choice. I agree. It was really weird. Like everything else that happened last night.

It's been called The Oscars since the 1930's, Don.
