I think you're completely right that the members know each other so well and have such rapport. I crashed the party, and then I paid the price for it. Well, there you are: you're a braver man than I, as well. Here's hoping it's only a "Let's see what this guy's made of" rite-of-passage, sorta like a frat house initiation.

Doghouse6And, just like that, assumptions get me in trouble. I apparently misinterpreted the post that really made me angry. I already apologized to the person, but it was still my mistake. That's an innate difficulty of "speaking" only through words on a computer screen, but it is what it is.

Doghouse6 That's an innate difficulty of "speaking" only through words on a computer screen, but it is what it is. Indeed. It was no more than a half-hour ago I had to begin a reply on another site - a political blog - with, "Perhaps I didn’t express myself clearly..." In the earlier days of the 'net, I was more optimistic than those lamenting an impending, slow death of face-to-face human interaction, hoping it would get people paying attention to reading and writing again, facilitating more precise communication when any of us could become our own publishers. And what did we get? "ROTFLMAO," "C U 2 Nite" and Twitter, along with lessons on how easily even the most well-intended and carefully constructed missives can be misunderstood. And that's how emojis were born, I guess. It's now your turn to send me a bill, Doc.

Doghouse6Ahh, I had a feeling we were both psychiatrists. By the time this is over, we’ll be like the Crane Brothers. Seriously, my apologies for not replying sooner; I’ve been in Vermont all weekend without WiFi. I can never quite understand how much interpersonal communication has gone downhill in the last decade-and-a-half or so (and, dear God, how we need it, especially in politics); as you say, computers (and, now, texting) have so much to do with it, but we’ve largely lost one of the most valuable skills of all. Sic transit and all that, I suppose. Anyhoo, re: Mark, it seems that the anti-parody folks will not accept that it was made parodically, campily, or otherwise humorously unless there is direct evidence of Browning or the writers’ intent here. Reminds me a bit of that “death of the author” subject we discussed before here, but I’m not broaching that subject over at the CHFB.

NalkarjRe: Yours of the 12th I wish I had an excuse for not replying sooner as good as that of having been in Vermont without WiFi, but the truth is I haven't been any father away than the supermarket in weeks. Just lazy, I guess. At the risk of exposing yet more literary or cultural unawareness, who might they be? All I turned up were purveyors of menswear in Aukland. Looks to me like there were those who, for their own purposes, seized an opportunity that you or I might have hoped would lead to better things to accomplish just the opposite; if I live long enough, I won't be at all surprised to see discourse having dwindled to the level of "Me Tarzan, you Jane." Sic transit, indeed ("Hey, man, who's this Gloria chick I keep hearin' about?"). And after that mini-rant, I can hope only that the answer to my query above doesn't leave me with αυγό on my πρόσωπο. After 36 years, I haven't figured out if Mommie Dearest was intended as satire or not, either.

Doghouse6Re: the Crane Bros., I was just referring to the TV show Frasier, in which both Frasier and Niles Crane are psychiatrists. Just a joke. And no worries about not responding sooner!

One thing I have found out, intriguingly enough, is that it wasn’t I who prompted the contretemps there. There’s an extended debate there right now on how Frankenstein brought the Monster to life in Shelley’s novel, and it’s getting just as heated as the Mark of the Vampire debate, even without my, er, help. (No offense intended; I’m still a member there [as I know telegonus is], and I still like it there.)

The ending definitely sucks (in the wrong way as far as vampires go). What a shame as there are some really spooky bits.

How nice that you've revived this thread, and at such an appropriate time; it's given me a chance to reread the interesting discussion it generated (gosh, has it been a year?). Nice also to learn even at a late date that you didn't instigate that hoo-ha on the CHFB. I still lurk there, and checked in on the "Mary Shelley and Jack Pierce" thread about a week ago, and did so again today to follow up on your update vis-à-vis the Monster's life source. As trepidatious as I remain about jumping in over there, I'll say this much: even rancor is expressed with style and erudition. Gotta love that.

I’m relieved (to be honest) that you think it’s nice that I’ve revived it, as I was debating whether or not to bump it. I loved that discussion as well—one written “with style and erudition,” as you call it. I don’t mean to instigate any hoo-ha, especially about movies we all like, certainly in comparison with the outer world at large, which does not love or know classic film. With that said, I was surprised that it got heated about Shelley’s novel—though, I suppose, it’s a delight that they’re (and we’d be) arguing about an excellent classic novel, rather than (e.g.) contentious political cant or ceaseless sports jabber.

As well as a movie junkie, I'm also a political one (sports...except for the Olympics, feh), and in the bolded text, you've illuminated one of the ironies of our times: more civil and reasoned discussion can be had about things that don't affect our survival than can be easily found about those that do. And as regards "our times," I suppose much of that is by design, given the zero-sum-game blood sport into which matters of governance and public policy have descended, although there may be some sort of perverse logic in passions about such matters becoming ungoverned. Still, my cynical view is that it's more the former than the latter. Stepping off soapbox now.

Just be careful.. in that NW climate of yourn, those soapboxes can get mighty slippery ! How true! Given the divisions between east and west, WA may as well be two separate states. But I always wear my high-traction snow boots when conditions become icy. Hmmm...I put a toe back on that box, didn't I?
