I’ve had this idea recently of a Lex Luthor origin film. Like Joker, it would be a film that has no connections to any ongoing franchise, and it wouldn’t be made with sequels in mind. It would just be a standalone film that serves as a character study. Superman would not be anywhere in the movie either.
Also like Joker, the movie would serve as a period piece, but in this case, the majority of the movie would be set in the 2000s, and would present an alternate history where Lex Luthor tries to run for President in the aftermath of 9/11, as an Independent. Before that however, the early parts of the movie would focus on Lex Luthor’s rise to becoming a wealthy and ruthless businessman. There would be some attention paid to Lex’s relationship with his father, and how he helped shape Lex into becoming the person he is.
As a whole, the movie would basically work as a pseudo-biopic. Any thoughts?

It's not bad. My premise would basically be The Social Network meets Scarface.

There would be no 9/11 in a world with Superman in it so you've already ruined your story from the get go.

Then it would be pointless and off to not have Lex Luthor's enemy in the movie or the very mention of Kryptonians. 9/11 still happening in a superhero world would lose my interest and would come across too pretentious to me.

It should be like Joker. Superman is a kid at the time so can’t do much to prevent 9/11.

Here's the thing you're aiming to use an already recognised character Lex Luthor in your hypothetical project but the mistake you're making is in thinking you can pick and choose his best bits which I hate in some filmmakers, no offence.

I love the idea of a Lex Luthor solo film. I think now would be a good time to do it for multiple reasons. For one, obviously the success of the Joker. Secondly, you could make it for a relatively small budget (60 million or so). With the pandemic mid-budget movies with a strong appeal are needed at the box office.
My idea for the film though would be make it like a family drama. Something similar to HBO's succession. You can see Lex rise from maybe this wimpy kid who was emotionally bullied by his wealthy father into a supervillain.

Jesse Eisenberg says he "would love to play" Lex Luthor again in a future DCEU project, but admits that decision is "is just not up to me".
