Huh... Thought for sure they'd go for a sequel. It will be written again by the 2019 film's screenwriter. No info on the plot yet.

I didn't think the 2019 movie was a big enough hit to justify a sequel or prequel, but it looks like it was.

Except that this year has sorta thrown that stigma for a loop. Big budget and awards hopeful movies are being released this way now.

But the point is that things are obviously changing. Direct to streaming doesn't mean it's being dumped into the wasteland anymore. It's clearly not the same thing as direct to video used to be.

I think maybe the argument could be that the quality of a movie like this will likely compare to the DTV fare of 20 +/- years ago. Being that the Pet Sematary remake wasn't a huge hit, they're probably not dumping an awful lot of resources into this. Just an excuse to push the brand out into the marketplace once again.

Sure, that might work in this case, but of course we are seeing big movies with big movie stars released to directly to streaming services. Of course that's been accelerated this year with HBOmax being the spot for the entirety of Warners slate for this year, but it was trending this way anyway. You could also make the opposite argument thar Paramount+ is a new streaming service and they are putting a name brand product on their to launch it. Now... that may not be the case here since nobody seemed to like the new Pet Semetary movie, but that is how some of these launches have gone.

I despised the reboot, so I doubt I will be interested in anything else that is being offered on this tale. I like the original and the sequel to it even better. The sequel is particularly fun violence.

Didn't like the remake, so if this prequel is by the same writer, I'll pass. It was a real stinker.
