If you like them husky voiced, with a slow diction in speech, that could be both friendly or dangerous to know she was the girl for you!
Joan Greenwood with her special personality and voice enchanted moviegoers, especially in the late 1940's and early 1950's, and then she kind of disappeared but actually didn't she continued to act way up until she passed away in 1987.
This year it's 100 years since she was once born.
Joan Greenwood (1921- 1987)
Young Joan originally wanted to be a ballet dancer but then decided to act and studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.
She learnt fluent French when rehearsing for Moliere's The Imaginary Invalid to better understand her role, and she was just 18 y/o.
While doing both repertory and steady theater work she was spotted by Leslie Howard who cast her in a notable role in The Gentle Sex 1943, which was a hit.
Her first co-starring role, The October Man 1947, a mystery movie with John Mills.
Saraband for Dead Lovers 1948 with Stewart Granger, become to expensive to make a profit in Technicolor and sets.
Then came Whisky Galore aka Tight Little Island 1948 that kicked of the British Ealing comedies.
Sibella in Kind Hearts and Coronets 1949, against 8 Guinesses, and Dennis Price.
With Alec Guinness in The Man With the White Suit 1951
As Gwendolen in The Importance of Being Earnest 1952, With Michael Redgrave, Michael Denison and Dorothy Tutin.
Kissing the French hunk of the 1950's Gérard Philipe in Monsieur Ripois aka Knave of Heart (UK) aka Lover, Happy Lovers (US) 1954. A big hit in Europe.
Then it slowed down, appearing mostly on the stage and on that new thing called television.
As Lady Warren in Father Brown aka The Detective 1954, with Alec Guinness.
Replacing Merle Oberon in Fritz Lang's Moonfleet 1955, making her Hollywood debut, surrounded by Stewart Granger and a bemused George Sanders.
Shipwrecked mother of Beth Rogan in Ray Harryhausen's popular trick movie Mysterious Island 1961
A flashy bit-part as Lady Bellaston in the hit movie Tom Jones 1963
Playing the Aunt of Hayley Mills in Disney's Mystery movie The Moon-Spinners 1964
Then she continued with TV and theatre, and did a few movie appearances in better to be forgotten movies.
In the last year of her life she appeared a few more times, like here, as Selina Hazy in Miss Marple: At Bertram's Hotel 1987 TV movie, back when Joan Hickson still played Miss Marple.
Screen farewell as Mrs Clenham in the very long version of Dicken's Little Dorrit 1987
In 1960 she married actor André Morell a marriage that would last until his death in 1978
Thanks for watching!
All kind of opinions are welcome!
