I hope I'm not alone here, you're going good and steady through a book and suddenly, you get distracted, another book takes priority, you forget about it, etc., then it's months or even a year later and you're still only halfway through. Do you start over from the beginning again or pick up where you left of?
It really depends on the book and how much I retain. Had to start over with Dracula after a year, picked up at the halfway point on 'Salem's Lot, same with Sharky's Machine, planning it for The Stand.

It varies, but depending on how far I am, I'll just go back a few chapters to recap. I did this with Titus Groan. I had put it down for over a year and went back about two or three chapters just as a refresher.

Nicholas Nickleby, just so fucking boring and seems to go on forever. Will finish it eventually. Agree with Titus Groan too. And Stephen King books where he decides half way through to suddenly give his readers a totally unnecessary 200 page history of some town in Maine and every bastard who has ever lived there.

I have had to restart Alias Grace twice. Got about 1/3 way through and then got distracted by something else. If it's non-fiction I will pick up where I left off.

This used to happen to me more often before I was on Goodreads. In the pre-internet days it was more difficult to keep track of what I was reading. Sometimes it happened that I mislaid a book and I would only find it by chance months later having almost forgotten that I had started reading it.
I guess it would depend on the complexity of the plot whether I start over from the beginning or simply continue reading from where I left off. Also to be fair, sometimes when I do forget about a book, it's a sign that it wasn't a very gripping read in the first place and then I don't even bother to finish it, or I flip to the last pages to read the end, and if I like it I might still read the rest.

Yes. I did this with The Tommyknockers. I’m also kind of doing it with a Sherlock Holmes collection right now but I’m stopping after the shorter stories are concluded rather than in the middle of one, so it doesn’t really count. I just pick it up when the mood strikes, read another 20 page long short story about Holmes solving a mystery and put it back down for a few weeks.

I've restarted Tristram Shandy many times. Someday... Did it! I finally finished Tristram Shandy. This was a pleasant audiobook reading by Anton Lesser, an actor I see all the time on British TV. Now, I would need an annotated print edition to do the book justice. He spoofs literature of his time and I could use a guide to his references.
