Any merger that doesn't end with one or both clubs ceasing to exist is a success in my book.
Fun round in the AFL with a bunch of upsets that have left at least 6 clubs in the hunt for the the last two spots in the 8 (meanwhile there's at least 6 NRL clubs not in the 8 who can still finish as high as 6th! Swans look like a genuine dark horse to win the comp. GWS are a basket case.
On the Hawthorn succession plan: this is the fifth time this has been tried and the only two that have worked both involved Paul Roos not wanting to continue past a certain point and actively choosing and training his replacement. Rutten succeeding Worsfold at Essendon may work, but that was when the Bombers basically told John he was either training his successor in 2020 or he was out of work. Going against the will of a veteran coach for a young upstart who he coached as a player just sounds way too much like Collingwood a decade ago to me.

Geelong and Melbourne both appear to have one hand on their premiership trophies to me. Fair to say that Penrith and Souths (if they have everyone in for finals) are looking far stiffer opponents for the Storm in the NRL than the Bulldogs and Melbourne are for Geelong in the AFL. Swans go well against Geelong but they're too young and coming from a little far back for me to fully buy into this year.

That fell through quick! Hawks have to pay him out over a million. I wonder if the Blues or Pies have come knocking or if he's looking at a couple of years off?

Surely Carlton try and get Clarko. Where they are and what they need, Clarko is the man to do it.
In the NRL, Parramatta were very ordinary in a 28-0 loss to the Chooks in what was the very antithesis of semifinal football. Loose, lots of ball movement, a plethora of errors from both sides on both sides of the ball.

I was going to try to watch the end of the Parra/ Roosters game, saw the Chooks were up 18-0 and didn't bother.

Looks like a heartbreaker for the Tigers. Carlton doing it pretty easily over the Saints in a game I've no interest in watching.
Broncos up 10 over the Cowboys at the half. Three very ordinary matches on paper tonight. While the NRL's most anticipated match of the season is safely tucked away on Foxtel Saturday night.

Broncos v Cowboys (won 37-18 by Brisbane) was a pretty entertaining game. Absolutely awful bunker decision though at 28-18 cost Nth Qld a certain try and killed off all their momentum. They probably win if it was rightfully awarded.
Warriors 18-16 over a insipid and disgraceful Tigers. It’s only heartbreaking for the fans having to watch this shit over and over again.

No more NRL this weekend, while the AFL has to postpone 3 of their 6 matches following a snap 3 day lockdown of Queensland.

Thanks Anastasia. One day too late !
This is bad for the NRL - they’d be hoping like hell it’s only a 3 day thing.
Something tells me it’s not.

The AFL'S relocated all their QLD games to Melbourne tomorrow.
NRL's looking for an exemption to go ahead on Sunday as scheduled.

Looks like they got the exemption. Saturday's games to happen today. Today's scheduled games bumped to Monday.
But for some reason they changed the order of today's games. Storm v Panthers going ahead at 4.05. What normally happens 4pm Sundays? Smart call.

Knights failed to capitalise on a 20 point lead over the Broncos, letting in two late tries to nullify any meaningful boost in differential for the winners.
There were some nice line breaks, Corey Oates making a great run, but neither team impressed me overall. One of Brisbane's tries came from a clear forward pass.
In AFL, Collingwood were set to play their first game ever in Tassie this weekend, but the Tasmanian government had different ideas, locking down after 1 positive case and the game's been moved to the MCG. Of course, Victoria's locked down for 7 days again so who knows what's going on really?

Souths are looking like Melbourne's biggest challenger in the NRL, comfortably brushing aside Parramatta last night. Eels look like dropping out of the top 4 and absolutely miles off the pace of the big 3.
Dragons put in their best performance in about a month but still went down to the Raiders.
Really strong performance from the Gints last night knocking off Geelong at Kardinia Park. Toby Greene gave a typical performance: inspirational, best on ground and on report for putting Danger in hospital. Cats suffered a couple of other injuries to to Rohan and Dalhaus. Not the best time for a veteran team to have players out. But not the worst either.

Wests 18-12 up against the Dogs at the half in one of the worst games of the year. Last night - Penrith and Melbourne franked their premiership credentials with solid wins over the Chooks and Seaeagles respectively.

3 retirements in the AFL. Former Carlton captain Marc Murphy will retire after playing his 300th game this weekend. Great player on a terrible team most of his career.
Other two to go are 218 game Docker Stephen Hill and former Lion skipper turned Port Utility Tom Rockliff who played a grand total of 208 games.
Taylor Walker also looks finished after making racist comments at a SANFL game. In spite of apologising to Robbie Young, the man who he abused who accepted his apology and also appeared in an apology video with Walker, people are saying "that doesn't cut it." To be fair, the best way of avoiding trouble for racially abusing someone is to not racially abuse people to begin with, but a sincere apology sincerely accepted does "cut it" so far as I'm concerned.

Big round of games coming up. Nightmare set to come true for Parramatta fans. They're playing Manly while 5th placed Roosters are playing Brisbane. They'll be out of the 4. With the Raiders playing Melbourne, Titans playing Souths and Dragons playing Penrith, the winner of Knights/ Sharks will almost certainly go into the top 8.
In the AFL GWS can just about book themselves a finals spot with a win over Richmond and could move as high as 7th if Fremantle win the Derby. If the Tigers win they're still alive but will likely be 9th behind Essendon, who should beat Gold Coast.
At the top there's two points between 1st and 4th, so clearly any of those 4 clubs could take the Minor Premiership and it won't be settled until Round 23 where Melbourne play Geelong and Port play the Bulldogs.

LOL @ the 7 and 8 seeds in the NRL. There's a theory that Parramatta (who were bloody awful last night) will be really up against it in their elimination final against an opponent who's going to have to have fought and scrapped to win their spot in the 8. Rubbish. They'll be playing an 11-13 team who has no place in finals action. I'm hoping the sharks win this afternoon. Will leave us with 4 teams who are 9-12. Will also keep both our teams in it (in theory) at 8-13. So many below average teams this year.
In the AFL everyone will be a Dockers fan tonight as Richmond, St Kilda and Essendon all need West Coast to be on 40 points at the end of the round! If the Eagles win and Essendon lose to Gold Coast than the 8 is set apart from the order. What I expect to happen is Essendon and West Coast both win, which will leave it to GWS and the Bombers to fight out 8th spot in Round 23.

Well, 2 points makes a big difference for the Knights. You'd back them to make it in from here. Turbo down for Manly doesn't bode well given just how bad they were without him earlier in the season, but they should have some momentum now. Could dash their top 4 hopes though.
In the AFL, I think we can put a line through everyone not on 40 points. GWS and Essendon have their fates in their own hands. Higher up the table main interest is Port v Western Bulldogs. A loss to the Dogs there and they're in real danger of dropping to 5th.
Weird decision to have the bye between semi final and preliminary final week as it clearly disadvantages the Qualifying final winners.

3 really good games of footy tonight. Manly overcame the loss of Turbo to outlast a gallant Canberra 19-18. Penrith played 60 minutes of absolute class to beat Souths 25-12, after being down 12-0. The 2 13’s, Cam Murray and Isaah Yeo - were both outstanding. Honestly though, 2nd game back from a 5 game injury lay-off - Nathan Cleary oozed class and was the difference between the two sides. In the AFL - Power won by 2 over the Doggies. Robbie Gray proved that the cream will always rise with a kick to win it late on that never ever looked like missing…..
