William Shatner is getting a birthday cake with 90 candles on it today.
When I discovered Star Trek in the early 80s, I couldn’t get enough of it. There were daily re-runs just as I got back home from school. I remember looking forward to it, hoping that it would be a “new” episode that I hadn’t seen before. Of course that was looong before easily-accessible episode guides on the Internet, so I had no idea how many episodes there were in total and how many I had already seen. Anyway, I loved Captain Kirk, Spock, Dr. McCoy and the whole crew. Much later, as an adult, after watching the other Star Trek series, I tried going back to The Original Series and found that I just couldn’t stand it anymore. It was just too dated, and with all due respect to the birthday senior citizen, he was a terrible actor.
I have two degrees of separation from William Shatner. I know someone whose mother went to university with him here in Montreal.
Interestingly, Shatner and his Star Trek co-star Leonard Nimoy were born just four days apart. Mr. Spock would turn 90 this coming Friday were he still alive.
I think I will watch the first Star Trek movie this evening in his honour.

I think his acting was good in some things. Sometimes they get lazy. I saw a show he did where he visited his childhood home and knocked on the door and this woman answered-he spoke in french to her---she was shocked--then they toured the house and he talked about it.

He looks amazing for 90. He's a living example of "Live long and prosper!"

It was the success of Shatner and his costars on the big screen that led to the concept of new Star Trek television series. Not even the Next Generation cast could replicate the big-screen success of the First Generation, barely eking out four movies before losing at the box office to Maid in Manhattan and leading to a seven-year Star Trek movie drought until the "resurrection" of Star Trek by JJ Abrams, and that has only lasted a paltry three movies with its future up in the air after five years. And no Star Trek television series cast has since graced the big screen, with the sole exception of Leonard Nimoy for two more grand encores in JJ Trek. Even Patrick Stewart has gone the way of The X-Files cast, going from TV to movies to TV again. But then again, Patrick Stewart being Patrick Stewart and Picard being Picard, Picard appears to the be the cream of the current Star Trek crop.

But yet "The Deadly Years" got it exactly right with Dr. McCoy! Yeah, pretty close. BTW, if you enjoy Star Trek and movies in general, you should check out the IMDB v2.1 Movie Quotes board, where we have "trekked" over 400 movies to date!
