Every year this has been a tradition of mine to watch during the summer, but for obvious reasons last year I skipped it. I had the whole miniseries taped off Sci-Fi many years ago, and then re-recorded it on DVD, 2 DVDs because of the commercials. A couple years back I bought the DVD for $5 at Walmart, and just now got around to watching it...now I know they had to cut stuff out for commercials, but as much as I used to watch it, I have very clear memories of parts 1, 2, and 4, but trying to remember how 3 fills up 1 1/2 hours, I came up with a lot of blanks. Watching it uncut and commercial free, there is a LOT of stuff here that I don't ever remember seeing when Sci-Fi showed it. Most of Harold and Nadine's scenes together, Larry talking with the judge, I sure as hell never saw Tom working out at the air base, and I don't remember a lot about when he left either. Is it me, or did they really butcher episode 3 to cram it all into the time slot?

Problem with The Stand, same as It or The Dark Tower is that I enjoyed the books so much that no adaptation will measure up. I have the characters to ingrained in my mind. I thought Jamey Sheridan did a decent job as Randall Flagg but it wasn’t what I had pictured. And I thought the first part of the novel, “Captain Trips “ as good as anything King ever wrote. Have you tried the new miniseries? I might give it a go someday

Wouldn't surprise me. There have been a few times when I got used to watching a version of a movie I taped off cable, and then was surprised to see an unedited version with entire scenes I haven't seen before.

Have you tried the new miniseries? I might give it a go someday Most fans seem to hate the new miniseries. Personally, I didn't hate it, but it definitely wasn't great. Just okay. The biggest disappoinment was the last episode. A feel like a big deal was made about the episode because King was writing it himself, and he talked about how he was specifically writing it to give Frannie's character a better, more fleshed-out ending in the story. The episode just ended up being kinda "meh".

I've read that he really didn't care for The Stand and is perplexed that fans love it so much. Other than the Dark Tower books, I look at The Shining, the Stand and It as his Unholy Trinity. Yeah, I've loved some of his later stuff, the Mr. Mercedes/Bill Hodges trilogy, Doctor Sleep. But those three were the bomb. It was the one book I couldn't read after dark when I lived alone
The Dark Tower was on another level

I had a VHS copy of The African Queen that I taped off AMC when they showed classic films. Must have watched it 20 times, so I never watched it on TV. When I finally seen it on TCM later I was yelling "what the hell is this scene? I've never seen this before."

That’s what happened to me with The Shawshank Redemption. I had read the novella before I saw the movie. It’s a good movie, and I like it, but the book just blew me away, which kept me from loving the movie.

And I didn't care for the book that much. For a while. Probably because the Grady Girls aren't in the novel and they were the creepiest part of the movie. But after the 2nd or 3rd reading, I grew to love the book more. The Topiary Animals, the "Dog-Boy", the Elevator (was more creepy in the book that the blood flood of the film). And the ending was better. A little bit of redemption for Jack. And Jack's decent made sense in the book. In the movie, his cheese just slips off his cracker for no reason.
The silver fire axe in the film was a big improvement. Much more iconic than a roque mallet

I haven't. I saw the original before I even knew it was a book, so to me it was perfection from the get-go, so I already have that bias and expect the new one to fail miserably. I might check it out someday, but not anytime soon.
