I realized towards the end of the episode, it’s a “Kid” or “Family” friendly version of “Cobra Kai” the TV series from YouTube and now NETFLIX.
In the show, you have a loser kid who gets kicked off the Mighty Ducks (btw, the Mighty Ducks are now like the Hawks from the 90s movie).
The mom embarrassed him (Like Miguel and his mom). He runs into Gordon Bombay. He’s old, past his prime and kind of a loser. He tells the kid and his mother “she needs to not fight his battles for him, instead, let the kid be a man and stand up for himself.”
Gordon runs a run down ice rink called “Ice Palace”. The mom decides to let the kids who aren’t good enough to make a team to join together and make their own Hockey team of a bunch of rag tag losers. Gordon doesn’t allow Hockey in his rink. But due to financial troubles, he is allowing them to play there because the lawyer mom has a grant that will pay him a good sum.
I can see where this is going. He is a slob, just like Johnny Lawrence in the pilot episode of Cobra Kai. He is also a 90s guy who is bringing his manly ideology from the 1990s. “Stop cutting up the kids grapes, he’s 12. Let him be a man. Don’t baby him.” The kid friendly Johnny Lawerence type.
Replace Karate Dojo with Hockey. This will be a rag tag group of losers (like the kids in Cobra Kai) who make the Pee Wee championship (like Miguel in Cobra Kai) and beat the Mighty Ducks (instead of Myagi Do).
Still, for a Disney show. It’s pretty good. My 10 year old was hooked. I hope it’s good.

I liked the pilot. It's definitely very family friendly or kid oriented, but I pretty much expected that going in. I still think there is stuff for adults to enjoy. Also, I like Cobra Kai, so I'm fine with this sorta being a copy cat. As long as they add their own voice to it.
One thing I really hope for is that we get appearances by the whole Estevez/Sheen family. Would love to see Emilio and Charlie acting side by side. Also, would love to see Martin Sheen appear.

I feel like Charlie Conway will be the Daniel LaRusso character in this. I’m fine with it too. My son and I watched it. We loved it. And he is only 10. I don’t think he’s quite old enough to watch Cobra Kai.

As for Cobra Kai, I think it would be fine for like a 13-14yr old, so maybe in a couple yrs your son could enjoy it. But I'm not a parent, so definitely make your own call.

I like this show, just I don't quite get it though, like why is Gordon so down on his luck, he's A: a lawyer by trade and a damn good one at that, B: Wasn't he last we saw him running the Jr goodwill games or something and somewhat of a celebrity? Sure it's been 20 years but surely he'd be doing well especially if hockey is doing so well and the team he created basically is still a big deal.
I dunno I think they would need to do something major to explain why Gordon is so down and shitting on hockey, my guess is Charlie has passed away possibly due to Hockey in some form, which explains why all the other main cast who were in all the movies will be back for an episode this season but not Joshua Jackson, you know because this happened with Gordon before when his dad died, so makes sense if something happened to Charlie he would react similarly I guess.

I thought the same thing. Why is Bombay so regressed back to this state? And notice in episode one, the new kid is wearing the “Minnesota” sweater, then in episode two, his mom is wearing it. A nod to Charlie from the first movie.

Episode 3: Spoilers Below:
I loved the idea that Gordon is softening up. But it’s odd that Gordon paying a college player to help him forced him into a hermit.
I get it, he was trying to do the right thing. And then he was punished.
But to just isolate and be alone? Why didn’t he just go back to being a lawyer? That doesn’t make sense.
I assumed Charlie died. Or something. I’m not saying I wanted Charlie to die, but it had to be something like that for him to hate Hockey and isolate.
But I digress. I still like the show. I hope it continues to progress. The kids are fine, not the best kids on a show ever, but the heart of the show is definitely Bombay softening up to the mom and kids.

Same, have they also retconned the history now, is D2 and D3 not cannon to this show, because it's strange they didn't mention the goodwill games stuff, and Gordon stopped coaching the Ducks after that when they were still about fun to work for that, so it's a bit odd. I do get why he didn't go back to law though with this idea though, he left the Ducks when they became all about winning, this was the toxic behaviour Gordon had in the first film, so if he despises that he wouldn't go back to being a lawyer as winning is all that matters there, if you can't be the best you don't succeed in court, so that kind of makes sense, but weird he never moved down to high school hockey where the recruitment stuff probably would not be an issue and where he could have the balance between getting paid as well as helping kids find their path like he did with the Ducks through Hockey and all that stuff.

That’s what I was thinking too. Did D2 and D3 not happen? The way this story is set up in Game Changers is that Gordon coached D-5 and went pro, hurt his leg and came back to coach the Ducks until they became all about winning and quit to go coach College. Then he gets fired for giving a player money. They didn’t mention him being a lawyer at all.
