A movie being watchable doesn't make it not awful. I think there is a term for these types of awful movies. Battlefield Earth is "so bad it's good" imo. It is an ironically hilarious movie and I honestly like the atmosphere and tacky sets. With that being said, there are very few movies I think are unwatchable. I had a much harder time finishing Moulin Rouge (2001) than Battlefield Earth. Moulin Rouge is borderline unwatchable imo. Plan 9 From Outer Space is a "so bad it's good" for me, while Battlefield Earth is not. Both had bad (very bad) acting, but BE's came from real actors, Forest Whittaker, John Travolta, Barry Pepper. Ed Wood got what he could get out of Vampira, Tor Johnson and the morphine addled Bela Lugosi. It probably cost more to film 30 seconds of BE than the entirety of P9. Mostly, there's a goofy charm to P9. The silly costumes, the inane dialogue, the cheesy effects. None of that in BE.
All in the eye of the beholder. Some of my unwatchable, any "action movie", ones where there's 15 death and 25 explosions before the opening credits, all the Rocky movies after the 1st (fresh in my mind, I just tried to muddle through II), basically, stuff w/o plot.
Watching good actors give terrible performances is part of the fun. Battlefield Earth isn't charming or re-watchable, but it amused me the one time I watched it. We just might have a different opinions in what makes a movie "so bad it's good." There is more than one type of movie that falls within this category. Highlander 2 is probably my favorite "so bad it's good" movie, though I have only seen the Director's Cut. I have heard the DC is a bit better than the theatrical version. I rate Highlander 2 - 4.5/10.

I can see the fun in a Monster a Go-Go or The Brain that Wouldn't Die and I can't in Gigli, The Golden Child, Rocky IV

Gigli is just mediocre. People find the movie offensive, but it is perfectly competent imo. Rocky IV I am sure you are aware has a big fanbase. I think it is an alright movie. Dumb, but fun. Rocky V is the only Rocky movie I think is flat-out bad. I actually think Mystery Science Theater: The Movie is incredibly boring. There is another differing opinion.

MST3K the movie wasn't their best effort. They made a mistake, taking a somewhat decent film, This Island Earth, rather than one of the big bombs they usually did. The riffs just wasn't there.
My problem with the Rocky's and when they become unwatchable, is in the fights. Have you, or anyone here, ever been hit with a true roundhouse punch? I have, I was jumped, three guys held me and one guy, about my size, hit me as hard as he could. I still, 35+ years later, still feel the effects. And I never could have survived another. Yeah, no boxing gloves, but the other guy was 200 lbs+. No one, Rocky Balboa, Apollo Creed, Clubber Lang, Ivan Drago, Freddie Fooly, could have taken that much punishment. So the fights were as realistic to me as an armored column appearing in the movie Gettysburg and winning the battle for the Rebels.
And my apologies darkside, for really hijacking your thread. My bad

You find the fight scenes unwatchable because they are unrealistic. I don't care that they are unrealistic. Movies being able to bend reality is one of the reasons I am such a big fan of movies. I have been punched full force in my head. I nearly blacked out.

I am curious as to what it was like in the theater seeing panned Murphy movies like Golden Child and Beverly Hills Cop 3. How the crowd reacted, crowd size, etc.

I recently watched that movie for the first time after hearing my brother rave for years about how it was one of the best Eddie movies. It was a struggle to finish it because it was so damn bad. I watched it for the first time a few months ago myself. I couldn’t believe how bad it was. Like you said, it was a struggle to even finish it. I agree as well, Golden Child was horrible. What was Eddie thinking??

I agree as well, Golden Child was horrible. What was Eddie thinking?? $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. I don't think money had anything to do with, it was his choice of scripts. He likely would have gotten the same paycheck from Paramount regardless of which script he chose to do. From what I remember, after the enormous success of Beverly Hills Cop he was given a pile of scripts a mile long to choose from for his next movie (including one written by Neil Simon!!), and out of all of them he picked Golden Child.

Well Eddie has done some movies for the money:
"When Murphy hosted Saturday Night Live about five months after the film (Best Defense) was released, he admitted in his opening monologue that he knew the film was awful and did it for the money: "After I did 48 Hours and Trading Places, all these scripts started comin’ from everywhere, and I picked up a script called Best Defense. There’s a movie that sucked real bad! At first, I wasn’t gonna do it because I read the script, and I felt like I was an actor at first. But the money they gave me to do Best Defense, y’all woulda done Best Defense too, okay? ... I was like, 'What?! How dare you give me a script like this! Oh, that much money? Let’s go!' Best Defense turned out to be the worst movie ever done in the history of anything, and all of a sudden, I wasn’t that hot no more. So, I called up the producer of Saturday Night Live, and I go, 'Um, you still got my dressin’ room?'"

Yes I agree, there's no doubt Murphy did certain movies strictly for the big payday. Lots of stars have admitted to that. I was just referring to that one particular time period after Beverly Hills Cop when he probably could have selected a much better script to work with rather than Golden Child. Best Defense; now here's a movie I never saw, and I heard it was really awful. Sounded like another career killer for the Willard Huyck/Gloria Katz team.
