What do you think of this?
A pretentious, overlong and unbelievably sappy homage to Frank Capra's work, it almost plays like a parody due to how over-the-top it is. Jim Carrey is a blacklisted Hollywood screenwriter in the 1950s who develops amnesia and is mistook for the long lost favorite son of a small town who died during WWII. Of course the truth must eventually come out and Carrey needs to get the girl, make amends for the grievous mistake and set things right by telling off Joe McCarthy's thugs in congress.
It just didn't work for me. I like Frank Darabont's other films a lot, but I felt like this was just a huge, self-indulgent letdown. I remember having sort of a similar reaction to The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, but I thought that was considerably better.

I think I remember this movie having an Oscar Bait reputation attached to it.

It isn't great, but it's alright. Hilarious to think a guy who looks like Jim Carrey would have Matt Damon's voice.

I remember a few pieces of it on television. But this I wish they made an entire movie about instead.

Jim Carrey tried, but the overall product screams Oscar Bait. Not his fault.

Far from prefect, but there were bit's and parts I liked, and what a great cast beyond Carey.

I actually quite liked it and think it's one of Jim Carrey's best performances.

6/10 telling off Joe McCarthy's thugs in congress. As far as I know, this is the only Hollywood movie to defend the right of being a communist while still maintaining a patriotic attitude. Considering what so many Americans think about this ideology, that took balls.

Considering what so many Americans think about this ideology, that took balls. Duly noted, but that doesn't automatically make the movie good.

B-
It's alright, sunk at the time by its hype & Carrey's rep. Took me a couple viewings to wrap myself in it.
