I am re-watching The NeverEnding Story and I really forgot what this movie actually about. It is all set up in the first 10 minutes of the movie. I think you saying it is about imagination being destroyed is a bit narrow though. That is part of it, but more broadly it is about the things we care about and see beauty in going away and anxiety about a nihilistic void. This is where the depression aspect fits in. It is about dealing with what terrifies us through imagination, but that straying too far from reality is a bad thing. The turtle is hilarious, "we don't even care that we don't care." When the store owner says "you aren't ready for this book" because this is existential territory that is something that you start thinking about as you get older. I really haven't been giving this movie enough credit or focus in the past. It is also very much about the power of art in helping us cope and teach us lessons that we might not have gotten elsewhere. It taps into something deep within us. Thank you for inspiring me to watch this movie again. I’m so glad you did. It’s definitely one of those movies you watch as a kid for the surface layer, and as an adult for the second layer. The turtle is underrated. Most people talk about Falcor and The Rock Biter, which are great. I love how it shows this emotional journey Bastian goes through, depression, bravery/courage, strength, etc... it’s a fantastic film. I have issues with the last act. It spells everything out too much and is a bit too aware of itself and the very last moment of the movie is the worst aspect of it. It should have ended with him confronting the bullies in reality. Just personally doesn't work for me in the way it is suppose to. It's a good movie imo, not a great one. 7.5/10.

I’m pretty sure it was supposed to be 30 minutes longer with an alternate ending, but they just didn’t finish all the scenes and cut it short. Did a voice over and shot that scene.

It feels rushed in the last 20 minutes. The first half of the movie is very good though.

Another thing that bothers me about the movie is that it sets up these fun visually creative random Fantasia characters in the beginning of the story and then doesn't do much with them.

Never much cared for The Neverending Story.
Labyrinth, on the other hand, has a good story, neat soundtrack and David Bowie.
