Ben Affleck's second film he directed. The story is nothing you hadn't seen before even for 2010 but the film is well directed and acted. Jeremy Renner's earned a well deserved Oscar nomination as well. The characters aren't exactly the most three dimensional but the performances do a good job of elevating them. The film was shot on location in Boston which gives it an added authenticity. There is an extended cut of the film that I haven't seen that apparently has an alternate ending where Affleck's character dies and he gives the money to Blake Lively. This was a welcome change as Lively's character is a non entity overall in the film so the ending wouldn't have been affecting at all. Interestingly Jon Hamm plays pretty much the same character again 9 years later in Richard Jewell. There is even a scene with him and Olivia Wilde in that movie that is almost identical to a scene with him and Blake Lively here. ![](https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51kldm2rnIL._AC_.jpg)

I've only seen it once, but I remember liking it.

Your criticisms are what holds me back from being able to fully embrace the movie. The acting is what elevates the script, though I am not as fond of Renner's performance as most people. Rebecca Hall is hit or miss for me in general and here she is a miss and is the one performance that doesn't work for me.
6.5/10

I also liked it, but it's not one that I feel especially compelled to revisit.

It’s a good crime movie and a strong sophomore outing for Ben Affleck’s directing career. He was on a roll in the early 2010s.

I feel this could've been much better with someone else than Affleck in the lead. His limited acting range pulls the movie down. The three action set-pieces are well-staged but the movie drags somewhat in-between.

I thought it was a great crime thriller. Well acted and soild direction from Affleck.
There was a 90s crime thriller throwback vibe about this movie.
