If I remember correctly, Willis was a really odd pick for the time for an action film (he was in the sitcom Moonlighting before that). I kinda wanna say Harrison Ford could have been a decent pick (he was considered)

I could maybe see Kevin Kline in the role, but I don't think anyone could have done it as well as Bruce.

From what I've gathered, the novel the film was based on was planned as a vehicle for Frank Sinatra.

Sinatra had starred in an earlier book that was adapted into a movie called the Detective back in the late 60s. The same author penned what became Die Hard and Sinatra contractually had right of first refusal if a movie was made.

Andy Garcia is my personal option “b” after Willis. He did a great job in the Untouchables just a year or so prior to Die Hard.
