deserved to win all those Oscars?
I have kinda mixed feelings regarding it, I mean it is a good movie but I feel like the academy was really just trying to make up for the first two movies being mostly ignored, not so much for the quality of the film itself.

Catman heard they waited until TRK to give out Oscars for the entire series.

Ben-Hur: 11 Oscars, 12 Nominations Titanic: 11 Oscars, 14 Nominations Lord of the Rings: Return of the King: 11 Oscars, 11 Nominations
Which deserved the most? Which deserved less.
It really depends on the competition that specific year in each category.
As far as those three films are concerned, I’d rank them:
1. Ben-Hur 2. Titanic 3. LotR: RotK
In my opinion, Fellowship was better.

Return of the King’s competition that year was Lost in Translation, Master & Commander, Mystic River, and Seabiscuit. Decent films but not exactly a murderer’s row of Hollywood. If not RotK then what was best pic?

Yes. It’s a masterpiece. Strange it wasn’t nominated for cinematography, though.

If not RotK then what was best pic? I’d say Bill Murray still got robbed for Lost in Translation when Sean Penn won for Best Actor for Mystic River. Sorry, not the point. Haha

You could argue that Peter Jackson got his Best Director Oscar to make up for the first two LOTR movies, but I think he deserved it, and was worthy of the award for all three films regardless if nominated or not.

Sure. The LotR trilogy was a pretty ambitious cinematic achievement and it’s nice that all that effort was rewarded.

I don't really care about Oscars but Mystic River was the best movie of the year. I'll take it any day over this childish crap.

I think the Oscar was basically for the whole trilogy. One can make the argument that Fellowship was better, but ROTK was still pretty damn amazing.
Mystic River was a film that definitely could have gotten a much deserved Best Picture, but overall I've got no problem with ROTK receiving it instead.

No
I think it deserved most of the technical category wins, but not the major categories.
Mystic River deserved the major wins.

Nah, if that was the case, they would've created a special category or something. They certainly wouldn't have nominated each installment. The awards are for the best of the year, after all.

LOTR: ROTK winning awards as a trilogy capper is fine, because the film is essentially one giant story, just like the book. The book was released as a trilogy because the publisher said so.
Besides, we're talking about awards to people who worked the same tasks for all 3 films. The trilogy was filmed as one giant production. It's fine.

Most of those awards were technical categories so it kind did.
Best director and best movie are more subjective but for me it deserved to win. The whole trilogy was a massive achievement IMO.
I wouldn't mind seeing Peter Weir get his best director award for Master and Commander. Amazing movie.
