Any fans of the computer-animated movie "Shrek"? How has it held up after 20 years? Isn't there another movie rumored to be on the way? I think I remember only seeing it once and it was fine. I wasn't blown away by it or anything, but it was a decent time-waster. Then again, I'm not all into computer-animated movies. Leonard Maltin Movie Guide Review: Shrek (2001) - 3 out of 4 stars"An antisocial troll is joined by a talkative donkey as he goes on a quest to save a beautiful princess. Funny spoof of fairy-tale sagas with some good laughs, not all of them aimed at children. Computer-animated fable mixes heightened reality with fanciful designs; from Pacific Data Images, the folks who made ANTZ. Based on a children's book by William Steig. "Special Edition" video runs 91m. Winner of the first Oscar for Best Animated Feature. Followed by a 3-D short, three sequels, a holiday TV special, Shrek the Halls, and a Broadway musical."

I prefered Dreamworks previous film "Antz" as well as "Shrek 2"

It was pretty good, though I think Shrek 2 was much better and funnier.
20 years? Wow....

Overrated like most cartoon movies.

I think it was the right movie at the right time. The second movie is much funnier but the original still holds up well and is well written. It could be argued the film had a negative effect on mainstream animated films but that shouldn’t be held against it.

I might be am the biggest fan of this movie on this forum. Just such a charming and entertaining film with great satire. Even when it's dated it's still fun.

Me too. I think 2 is really good too, but I enjoy the first on a personal level more and it has a tighter script.

I still haven't seen it... It just... never appealed to me.

It was great at the time. Not every animated movie needed to be a toy production line. It had mature enough humour to reward wider audiences. I'm sure it plays well enough these days, though I'd need to embrace it as a standalone it once was.
Alas, once its sequels machine started up, I walked.
I've never owned Shrek on DVD.

I’m convinced that the first two Shrek movies are what effectively killed the G rating.

I've always really liked it. Fun characters, strong voice cast, and an entertaining story.

I can't believe it's been 20 years. That's crazy.

I've never been as fond of Dreamworks as I am of Disney and Pixar. A big part of that is the animation style, which never quite worked for me. Shrek is one of their better works, however. I haven't watched it in many years.
