This is a tough one as to me, Murray is the better actor, but Chevy is the funnier guy.

On average, Bill Murray.
But I really like Fletch.

I don't think we've ever seen Chase do the type of roles that Murray has done like Lost in Translation or Hyde Park on the Hudson.

Murray is a great actor who happens to be funny. Chase is/was funny in specific character roles like Fletch or Clark Griswold... or some variant/generic version of that character type. Plus, Murray’s Ad-Lib acting is almost unmatched.

Chevy Chase, easily.
I think Bill Murray is overrated. He's as funny as whoever is writing for him. Chase was more naturally funny.

I was always under the impression it was the other way around. Chase was only as funny as the script/director and Murray was a masterclass at as-lobbing most of his lines.

This brings up a question that I touched on before. I assume you are asking who do you prefer overall and who has the better filmography, since you made it a point to list their movies. Chevy Chase is only likable and funny in a handful of movies and he doesn't have much range as an actor. Even if I thought Chevy Chase was funnier, Bill Murray would still win for his filmography, likability and range as an actor. I also agree that Bill Murray can make almost anything funny, regardless of the writing. Chevy Chase can only be funny if he is doing his clumsy act or if the writing is actually funny. You forgot to list On the Rocks (2020), which is one of Bill Murray's best performances imo.

The first time, as far as I know, Murray tried something serious was with The Razor's Edge and he agreed to do Ghostbusters if the studio would agree to do The Razor's Edge in return.

This is a tough one as to me, Murray is the better actor, but Chevy is the funnier guy. But how is Murray a better actor? I find Bill Murray very unimpressive is it because of Ghostbusters nostalgia making Murray's shit smell nice to people or is medication to blame? At best I'd put him at mildly very mildly smirk worthy but I wouldn't call him a better actor or an actor at all. I think these types of threads are pitiful users going for the nostalgia aspect instead of honestly appraising the man.

Bill Murray is a multivalent comedian and dramatic actor. Chase is mostly a one-note comedian. Bill Murray mostly does deadpan asshole or deadpan misfit roles I wouldn't call that "multivalent". He literally plays variations of the same deadpan moron in all his roles throughout his career.

I wouldn't call Murray's role of Bob Wiley from "What About Bob?" a deadpan asshole or misfit.

I just listed their filmography to give reference for casual movie watchers who may not be familiar with their overall career to guide someone to make a decision. But it’s a subjective question. If you like Chevy Chase more, despite the obvious discrepancy in their filmography, then that’s fine too. I know my dad loves Clark Griswold more than anything Murray has done. And would probably choose Chase because of that.

Fun Story about their Rivalry: In a curious move, Chase was invited back to host the show he left on poor terms in February 1978. Chase quickly realized that he had stepped into an environment that was "poisoned" against him. Murray, who had known Chase since they worked at National Lampoon together a few years earlier, seemed eager to channel the resentment to a climax. Late in the week, he brashly addressed the elephant in the room by telling Chase that everyone hated him. This ignited a shouting match, with the tension continuing through dress rehearsal. Afterward, Murray zeroed in on Chase's well-known marital discord with Jacqueline Carlin, telling him, "Go f**k your wife, she needs it." Chase, in turn, noted that Murray's pock-marked face looked like a landing spot for Neil Armstrong. Just before the show was set to air, Chase confronted Murray in Belushi's dressing room and challenged him to a fight. Murray lunged and Belushi leaped between the two larger men, drawing most of the punishment as the fists were flying. Almost immediately after they were pulled apart, Chase took the stage to deliver his monologue to the happy, clueless audience. He later claimed he wasn't rattled by the fight, though his ex-castmates reportedly noticed a clear difference in his normally cocksure demeanor. Regardless, the ratings for SNL that week were the show's highest to date.

I never found Chase to be the least bit amusing, let alone actually funny.

Murray didn't make Nothing But Trouble at least. I don’t understand what happened to Chase? After National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, it’s like he just fell off a cliff. There’s nothing great after that in his filmography. I know I'm in the minority on this one, but I'd put Spies Like Us from 1985 alongside his undisputed classics as well.
But overall, Murray has the much better filmography.
