It seems Warner Bros. is getting out of the Blu-ray/DVD business... www.thevulcanreporter.com/exclusives/warner-bros-exit-home-video-production/The Warner Archive collection will continue for a little while, but it looks as if the future plan is to license catalog titles to niche, specialty companies (the "boutique" labels)... maybe. That being said, I doubt we'd see something like ZACK SNYDER'S JUSTICE LEAGUE -- or any current, big-budget WB films -- being released by Arrow or Synapse, etc. Such movies are going to be streaming (or digital purchase) only.

Damn disappointing if that's true. I still like buying movies on a physical copy. Some clarification though from thedigitalbits.com: thedigitalbits.com/columns/my-two-cents/042321-1400"Finally today, a number of you have asked us about online rumors (over the last few days) that Warner Bros. Home Entertainment is basically shutting down their in-house physical media production operation. This is essentially true, but it’s also lacking important context. The reason they’re doing this, is that Warner Bros. and Universal are essentially merging their home entertainment operations. That new joint entity—Studio Distribution Services, which is now up and running after a slow ramp-up period in 2020—will produce and distribute Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD titles for both studios. None of this should come as a surprise to anyone; Warner and Universal essentially announced their intention to do this back in January of 2020 (see our report at the time here). (You can also read this Deadline report from the time.) The pandemic just slowed the process of getting it going down a bit. This, in theory, will allow them to do the same quality and level of work (in terms of releasing titles on disc) more efficiently and cost-effectively, allowing both Warner Bros. and Universal to stay in the physical media business for as long as possible. Unfortunately, it means that a lot of good people at each studio have been laid off (for example the dedicated Warner Archive Collection team at WB and much of the restoration team at Universal) as they combine their resources. But it can also be seen as a positive sign of each studio’s commitment to physical media in the long term. I strongly encourage you all to read the Deadline piece here. You should also know that I’ve confirmed just today that Studio Distribution Services is now in place and operating as intended. And there is no intention by either studio to discontinue their disc releases anytime soon. Hopefully, we’ll learn more about how all this is meant to work in the days and weeks ahead."

Should we still see a physical release for Mortal Kombat?

I will always be a physical media person. I don’t understand what is so hard to understand that a digital copy can always be taken away from you.

Where did it say they are reducing it? Theatrical released movies will still get a physical release. Also pretty sure that Justice League dvd is bootleg. There’s been nothing about a US blu ray release for it.

What l? No more Warner archive!?? Yeah not a smart move. This may backfire on them completely, just like releasing the straight to dvd movies to hbo Max. I just don’t get this streaming fad and I don’t know anyone who has all of these services. Everyone has maybe Disney+ and Netflix, but no one has HBO Max or Paramount+. Do these studios really think everyone has good WiFi?

They recently remastered Superman: The Animated Series but released it only on HBO Max and not on disc unlike Batman TAS, Batman Beyond, and Justice League. This will probably be their method going forward

They're trying to cut down on packaging costs to make more money. The video game industry is going through a similar thing (a lot of Gamestops are closing down since more and more people are just downloading games from home)

Well that confirms it then. They are not stopping DVD’s or physical media. Can we close this thread?

Well, as a DVD/Blu person, I will admit I'm down to maybe 1-3 new titles a year. I've pretty much collected all the ones I've wanted, & even given dozens of DVDs away to family & friends to cull the herd.
I would still hope for physical copy of all future Wes Anderson (Criterion) & Tarantino's next & last picture. MCU for me is in the rearview, I'll never be as amped as I was when they managed the improbable ensembles & mashups.
It would be very silly of any studio to outright abandon physical media - the profit margins on those things must be through the roof.

To be honest, I would find it shocking if a major studio stopped manufacturing physical media in the near future, for many reasons... But...
Weren't DVDs supposed to stop being produced years ago, once the HD-DVD/Blu-Ray format war ended?
Sure some older media doesn't have the "High Definition" quality that would be frowned upon, if released on Blu-Ray, but those are just some exceptions... However, that doesn't explain new media, that is all now in High Definition"...
I still see DVDs in the new release sections every week... But, Why?
And now with 4K discs, and 8K discs possibly in the future... it's even more mysterious...
As someone who has piss poor internet, I can't stream anything if I wanted to... And can't afford to pay for every "Service" out there...
I'm still thankful, that I can buy everything I want on Physical Media...
Especially since we don't own "The Cloud"... I don't know how many discussion I've seen, where companies shut down, or stopped streaming certain media...
I like being able to pull out my discs of what every I want, and anytime I want, and watch it as many times as I want... without having to worry about if companies, like: NETFLIX, still have it...
And what about Bonus Features?
Extended Cuts... Deleted Scenes... Documentaries...
That last I heard, that there isn't much of that being offered through streaming... or at the very least, it is seperate content with may cost you more... and again, that is assuming that it is available...
If they don't offer the movie, the why would they still offer the Bonus Features?
If people want to stream... Fine. Stream...
But I want the physical media.
I don't see why WE ALL can't have both...
And what happened to MOD. Manufacture On Demand?
I'd be perfectly OK with ordering a Disc, straight from Warner Bros. (and so on...)
But if DVDs are still being widely produced with so many newer and better options available...
Then clearly, I am not the only consumer that still wants physical media... And it seems I'm right about that, given some of the other comments posted in this discussion.
So, why end physical media now or in the near future?
That's just going to hurt these companies' profits.

Weren't DVDs supposed to stop being produced years ago, once the HD-DVD/Blu-Ray format war ended? I buy my junk on DVD. I've the Michael Bay Transformers 1-5 on DVD. I feel less dirty about that, & own those like I've lost a bet with my younger self - there are more live action multi-million dollar TF movies than G1 cartoon seasons. I still find semi older titles like James Bond to feel more authentic on DVD than Blu. I'll never need Citizen Kane or Casablanca on Blu. My oldest Blu releases are It's a Wonderful Life & A Christmas Carol '51 because my DVD copies started skipping/freezing, after 15+ years of annual use.

I find it refreshing so many of you also like physical copies of your movies. I thought I was one of the few. Everyone I know thinks I am a weirdo. Streaming is just okay but like someone said, not everyone has great internet / Wi-Fi service. I tried Disney Plus, just wasn't for me.

I feel like DVD’s and streaming is like Books and Kindle. Some people seemed to think that books were gonna go away cause of Kindle or that more people were gonna buy books on there. Be honest do you see people reading from a kindle anymore? As long as there’s a market for DVD’s and Blu-ray’s they’re not gonna go away.
I can’t wait to get my Mortal Kombat 2021 copy on hopefully a Blu-ray dvd combo pack.

The studios really don’t want you to have physical media in all honesty, they’d prefer you to only have streaming access, but for years they recognized the profit margin on them so kept up production. Sales have been falling for quite some time though so a merger between Universal and WB makes sense. I’ll keep buying physical media as long as it’s available. I stream films that I know I probably won’t watch again but buy everything else, especially older films that will probably never have a streaming option. The boutique labels do an incredible service for the classic film collector and Kino, Arrow, Criterion, Warner Archive and to a very limited extent now, Twilight Time and Olive do stand up releases.
