Tell me I'm not alone in noticing this.
The most recent example I can think of is in Breaking In, seems there's usually 3 intruders who take the family hostage, and one of them is the weak link, with half a conscience that they can't kill the family or even stand the thought of killing the family, but dumb enough to get killed trying to take a stand against the leader and the group psycho. It's a formula that feels very familiar even though other examples aren't coming to mind at the moment.

I think Panic Room had a similar situation.

Joel Schumacher's final movie was a home invasion movie called Trespass (2011) with Nicolas Cage and Nicole Kidman. The robbers keep emphasizing that the longer they take, the greater the likelihood they risk getting caught. But they take their sweet-ass time doing everything. The girl in the group even takes time to try on Kidman's clothes. It's so weird.

I believe it’s a trope. Evil has standards or something along those lines. Basically the moral conscience of the bad guys has second thoughts and either turns against them to help the good guys or becomes a victim.
