Is MY OCTOPUS TEACHER silly like the premise sounds? No, the bond between filmmaker Craig Foster and the sea creature he finds feels as real as if it had happened with a domestic animal. It would've made for a great documentary short or even a long segment during the news, but 85 minutes felt like too much. In fact, most of the film is about following this mollusk around without any direct human interaction. It's something you'd see on a nature channel, so it doesn't feel cinematic, despite the great production values.

I’ll admit that the title sounds like a parody of an Oscar winning documentary.
