I think it's a great fantasy adventure movie. Sean Connery is great as the voice of Draco. The CGI and special effects still holds up and the movie has a nice old school charm about it. Dennis Quaid made for a decent lead.
I saw it cinemas in 1996. It's a childhood favourite of mine.

It's a likeable medieval fantasy. By today's standards, Drago looks primitive, but Sean Connery still manages to steal the show because Drago is such a fascinating character. Randy Edelman's score definitely elevates the film, especially with the musical piece "To the Stars".

The score is really good. The ending is rather touching when the dragon's body goes up into the sky and the other stars swarm around it. Good use of special effects for emotional reasons.
When I saw first ads for this --I thought Quaid's character finds the dragon as a baby and raises him--because the one thing bad about it--is the CGI is very cartoony. The movements of the dragon are way too fast and light-weight.
Ebert or someone criticized the plot as too convoluted. It is far out. Dragons in those days would give pieces of their heart to potential rulers knowing that if the ruler was an asshole it would be bad for the dragon too?
Also, is it realistic that Quaid could go around killing all the dragons? I don't think he had the equipment to do that--or the dragons sure were wimps.
The mother and him should have known that prince was already becoming an asshole. He didn't hide his attitude very well-especially with Brian Thompson around.

I saw it as a kid. I was probably 12.
I really liked it. I haven’t seen it since. I might need to do a rewatch.

Sean Connery turned down Jurassic Park and did this movie. Let that sink in.

Sean Connery turned down Jurassic Park and did this movie. Let that sink in. So Dragonheart was filmed three years earlier than its release?

I really liked it when I was a kid. I rewatched it after Connery died (hadn't seen it in probably 15 years) and thought it was decent. The CGI doesn't look great, but I enjoy Connery's voice work and the movie is fairly entertaining for the most part. I felt Dennis Quaid was kind of miscast though.

Sean Connery turned down Jurassic Park and did this movie. Let that sink in. Don’t buy it. Jurassic Park filmed three years before this one and didn’t Connery just do a voice role? Seems like one of those fake bits of trivia

What role would he have played in Jurassic Park? Sean would've been a good John Hammond.
