‘Paddington 2’ Replaces ‘Citizen Kane’ as Top-Rated Film on Rotten Tomatoes:If there was any doubt as to whether or not “Paddington” is one of the greatest films of all time…well, there’s no longer any doubt, because “Paddington 2” has replaced “Citizen Kane” as the top-rated film on Rotten Tomatoes.
“Citizen Kane” has long been the top-rated film on Rotten Tomatoes with a 100% rating on the “Tomatometer.” But as of Tuesday, it’s slipped from 100% to 99% – all thanks to a negative review from 80 years ago. Yes, an 80-year-old review from the Chicago Tribune’s Mae Tinée with the headline “‘Citizen Kane’ Fails to Impress Critic as Greatest Ever Filmed” was what knocked the film off its pedestal.
“Citizen Kane” dropping its perfect score meant that “Paddington 2,” which boasts a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes’ “Tomatometer,” can now officially be known as the greatest film of all time. There’s no longer any contest. And look, we get why the Orson Welles film is usually hailed as one of the greatest movies of all time. Despite the fact that it famously lost its Oscar for Best Picture, it’s basically a staple of iconic cinema.
But you really can’t compete with one of the most lovable bears with a heart of gold and an affection for marmalade. Thankfully, the rest of the world seems to agree.
Enjoy your win, Paddington – you deserve it.

It took the Internet nearly two months to realize that CK no longer had a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

It's interesting that it was being called the greatest film of all time even upon release. I thought conventional wisdom was that it built up that title over time, or at least that there was initially a fierce campaign against it by Hearst.

Me too, but then I read an article that said because of the cinematography, transitions, etc... it was known as a cinematic achievement. And at that time, a lot of people said it was the greatest film of all time. Though it didn’t win “Best Picture” at the Academy Awards.

I have said it before, i don`t belive there is such a thing as a movie that can be name the greatest movie ever as its all subjective and not factual.

I went to see Paddington 2 after seeing the rave reviews and honestly it's not a particularly amazing movie. This is a case where I truly believe political climate clouded the minds of critics. This movie came out on the eve of Trumps first anniversary as President and critics fell in love with the whole "be kind and polite" thing, which is obviously a good message for a movie, and yes, in an actual good movie that theme would've been just what I needed to escape from the madness and chaos of Trump, but that coziness was trapped in a just average movie. Also, its ironic that the same critics that fell head over heels for the polite bear are also some of the most snide and condescending people you'll ever meet online.
