Not without giving spoilers. Good commentary track on the Criterion disc.

I don't reflect much on the past, I usually just move on to the next one.

Why can't you give an actual response. I thought I did. And yet you didn't at all.

There was plenty I liked about it, but the major drawback for me was the comic tone of a lot of it. Particularly with regard to the investigative efforts of the local police which made them look near incompetent. If done purposely for “comic relief” it took away from the overall mood of the film which for me would have worked much better played dead serious throughout. Otherwise there was a lot to admire about it. Some stunning visuals and amazing set pieces. The overall narrative arc was satisfying and avoided falling into too many genre cliches, which I feared it might a couple of times. I also really liked the ambiguity of the initial ending as well as the coda. Still sits just below Parasite in Bong’s filmography for me. I'd rate both an 8/10Now I just need to see Zhang Lu’s Love And... again, which obliquely references MoM

I found it thoroughly absorbing and gripping, marred at times by some clumsy attempts at goofy humour. Not up to Bong's finest work (Mother, Parasite) but memorable in its own right.

marred at times by some clumsy attempts at goofy humour. What was with that? Really let down what would have otherwise been a near masterpiece.

I have found it to be a common trait in even some of the very best South Korean films. Perhaps it's a type of humour that doesn't always translate well, but here it really did stick out and somewhat negatively impacted my reaction to the film. Parasite made me laugh more than almost any other recent movie, and it of course juggles tones quite beautifully, so perhaps it's something that Bong has perfected in the years since. I have been meaning to check out MOM again one of these days to see if my reaction to it is any different.

I have been meaning to check out MOM again one of these days to see if my reaction to it is any different. Possibly, I'm trying to think of any other Korean films I've seen with a similar vibe. The humor definitely worked much better in Parasite, but I put that down to the more "satirical" set up that seems to lend itself to comic moments. MoM is otherwise a more or less straight procedural/thriller and the comic elements just feel out of place. I think it also shows up in The Host, but again it's not as jarring in a supernatural monster movie.
