TITAN A.E. is about a blonde young man (Cale Tucker) bored with his mundane life and a brunette adventurer (Capt. Joseph Korso) who calls him "kid." They travel across the galaxy in a mission connected to the young man's father. And there's a ship that destroys a planet with a laser beam. Before you accuse it of copying STAR WARS, let me present my case. It's not a direct rip-off, because the plot is an amalgam of several other sci-fi movies. Hey, I didn't say it would be a good defense. The CG animation (used mostly for backgrounds) hasn't aged well and the traditional animation (used mostly for characters) doesn't have the same bouncy style that producer/co-director Don Bluth is known for. I guess it was done on purpose to make this look more mature than his other stories, but it prevents the movie from having its own voice... and it really needed one. While the alien designs are cool, nothing else stands out visually. Drew Barrymore's performance is bad, the action sequences are boring and every single song feels out of place. While it's not targeted at toddlers, I still think seeing a character's set of teeth after exploding and seeing another character getting their neck snapped is too intense for kids. The scene where Cale sees a hologram of his father (who has been dead for 15 years) should've been the character's emotional peak, but he... well... just stands there with his hands inside his pockets. That being said, there's a good chunk of clever trope subversions and funny self-aware jokes. The fact Gune (the chief scientist) isn't annoying despite having a Gurgi voice is quite an achievement! 4/10 ------------------------------------- You can read comments of other movies in my blog.
