What are some classic films with a "Twilight Zone" vibe?

REPEAT PERFORMANCE (1947) --

Stage Actress Joan Leslie shoots unfaithful hubby Louis Hayward in self-defense on New Year's Eve.

Then Joan discovers that she is reliving the entire year -- and tries for a different outcome.

The earlier thread asked for movies of any era that resembled specific TZ episodes. I like the "Classic" limit and the "vibe" aspect of this one. Some titles mentioned on the earlier thread also apply to this one.

Berkeley Square / Frank Lloyd (1933). Leslie Howard is magically transported back in time from his own year of 1933 to 1784.

All That Money Can Buy (aka The Devil and Daniel Webster) / William Dieterle (1941). Farmer James Craig sells his soul to devil Walter Huston. When Craig's time is up, he enlists Daniel Webster (Edward Arnold) to defend him and break the contract.

It Happened Tomorrow / René Clair (1944). The mysterious keeper of a newspaper's morgue presents struggling reporter Dick Powell with a copy of the next day's paper.

Inner Sanctum / Lew Landers (1948). On a train, a mysterious man with seeming clairvoyant abilities tells a tale of murder that took place at an upcoming station.

The Birds / Alfred Hitchcock (1963). The avian population begins an unexplained revolution against humanity.

The Night My Number Came Up (1955) UK. Leslie Norman. 
An excellent story about predestination, based on a supposedly real incident in the life of Air Marshal Sir Victor Goddard. At a party the evening before a routine flight from Hong Kong to Japan, a British officer (Redgrave) recounts a dream he had about being in a plane crash; the next day, events begin to conform to the dream... the scheduled plane develops mechanical problems and the substitute is the plane from the dream; there are personnel changes, passengers added, and suddenly the occupants of the plane match those in his dream… 

Air Marshal Hardie (Michael Redgrave) contemplates his fate...
                         

                                               

                        

The Rocking Horse Winner (1949) UK Dir. Anthony Pelissier. This excellent dark psychological fantasy is an adaptation of story from D. H. Lawrence. 
Into young Paul's unhappy home life comes Basset (John Mills) who has been hired as the families driver/gardener. Basset soon befriends Paul who is fascinated with his stories of his life, especially when he was a jockey. After Paul gets a rocking horse for Christmas, Basset shows Paul how to ride it as if it were a real horse.  Paul begins to hear the house whispering to him and while riding furiously he gets premonitions on the winners of horse races not yet run....

Three schoolgirls and a teacher seemingly disappear into the Twilight Zone while on a sightseeing trip to Picnic At Hanging Rock  (1975) Aus. Dir. Peter Weir.
 Unsettling and provocative, the film starts with a voice, presumably Miranda’s, who whispers a line from Edgar Allen Poe: “What we see or what we seem are but a dream, a dream within a dream,”...
Hanging Rock is a bewitching journey into the mystic, a disquieting and haunting Australian Classic.  In response to criticisms of the films enigmatic conclusion Director Peter Weir had this to say "There are, after all, things within our own minds about which we know far less than about disappearances at Hanging Rock"...

                               

                                                     

Night Tide (1961), directed by Curtis Harrington.

A lonely sailer falls in love with a strange woman working as a carnival mermaid at the pier. Too late, he discovers the police are watching her -- two of her earlier boyfriends drowned. She thinks she is one of the "sea people": a siren who lures sailors to their deaths. Oddly enough, other people believe it, too. He begins having lurid nightmares...

A micro-budget, minimalist production with both pro and amateur cast. It has a bit of the Twilight Zone and The Outer Limits (1963) ambience of the period, and that dreamy off-kilter mood of Carnival of Souls (1962). More than anything it seems like a return to the Val Lewton thrillers of the 1940s.

Like Psycho (1960) it wraps up with a rational (or rationalizing?) explanation.

Dennis Hopper was an unusual choice for the lead (his first). As warm and friendly as he tries to be, there is always a dangerous unreliability to his persona. You expect him to go all pervy and transform into a giggling sadist at any moment.

David Raksin score. Hopper did his own scuba-diving. Roger Corman helped with financing, such as it was, but the independent production had many money problems.

There seem to be several DVD versions. The one I got from Netflix is 4:3 letterboxed but has a late 1990s commentary track by Hopper and the director. Harrington confirms he was thinking of Val Lewton and Cat People (1942).

Also available online for free: Night Tide. I haven't watched that version.

This may be too obvious, but there’s always Planet of the Apes (1968), for which Rod Serling cowrote the script. The movie follows his plot largely faithfully; the changes, and cowriter Michael Wilson’s contributions, seem to be in dialogue and world building (Serling had a contemporary-looking planet of apes) rather than in plot.
