Studio Canal issued a dvd of Roger Vadim's intimate drama 'Love On A Pillow' (1962) and it's a fine way to see a restored print of the movie. I've seen five films that Roger Vadim made with Brigitte Bardot and this remains the only one that troubles me. It's a pure (though duplicitious) romance which isn't always my genre of choice, one that's largely constructed as a teleplay, yet veteran cinematographer Armand Thirard makes you almost forget this by deploying a bit of camera trickery. I like that it looks at the bohemian culture that Vadim and Bardot became immersed in, yet it's a whitewashed version, whereas their other movies really did push the boundaries of what was acceptable at the time. I guess it's a troubling movie to me, but one I'll watch every few years to remind myself that life is never perfect.
Dig that jazz, daddy-o!
