Any fans of the movie "Short Circuit"? How has it held up after 35 years?
Decent film that I grew up watching on HBO. In a sense, it's like a robot version of "E.T.". Johnny 5/No. 5 does have an appeal to it as a character. Guttenberg's East Indian assistant guy feels like a bad stereotype though (and is not played by a guy who is East Indian). The sequel wasn't bad and was one of the first movies I ever recall seeing in a theater.
Leonard Maltin Movie Guide Review:
Short Circuit (1986) - 2.5 out of 4 stars
"State-of-the-art robot develops a mind of its own and decides it doesn't want to go "home" to weapons company from which it escaped. Sheedy is cute as the animal-lover who becomes protective of "No. 5," the equally cute robot. E.T. clone is good fodder for kids but too formula-bound for our taste. Followed by a sequel. Panavision."

Watched this and its sequel as a kid. Think I preferred the sequel owing to having watched it first. Not a bad little flick.

as an Indian myself I thought Fisher Stevens was an actual Indian guy when I watched this for the first time. He was the convincing. Dude also got to date Michelle Pfeiffer in her prime. Lucky bastard

It's a good film...
6/10
But it seems a bit off for most of the film, due to Number Five, still trying to learn about who he is... It's not until the end that it gets better.
I prefer the sequel more... Johnny Five has to learn how to live in our cruel world of greed and betrayal...
I too, saw these films as a kid, and cried when Johnny Five was smash up and was dying... and rooted for him when he went after the bad guys... and loved the ending of the film.
7.5/10
Great double feature of popcorn films to watch any day.
Oddly, It's quite obvious... How Johnny Five, would become, at least, and unofficial template, for the design of Wall-E that came out over a decade later.
Yeah... E.T. + Johnny Five = Wall-E
That's not a bad thing... All great films.

A fun movie. I still use the quote "need input", e.g., here in the Word Association Game thread:

Fisher Stevens regrets his controversial 'Short Circuit' role: 'It definitely haunts me' www.yahoo.com/entertainment/fisher-stevens-regrets-controversial-short-circuit-role-191051910.html"I still think it's a really good movie, but I would never do that part again. The world was a different place in 1986, obviously." "I have friends who are Indian, and they're still mad at me. They're like, 'What were you thinking?' My wife [Alexis Bloom] isn't happy about it either. She keeps telling me, 'Look what you did!'"

Is that the one with the horribly offensive Indian portrayal? We need more movies like that.
