Any fans of the Jan De Bont movie "Twister" starring Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt? How has it held up after 25 years? Likely the second best movie from director Jan De Bont after Speed. I remember seeing it a lot on HBO back in the day and even on video. I also remember appearances from Philip Seymour Hoffman and Carey Elwes as the "villain" of the movie (Gee I wonder if all those black cars/vans are trying to tell us that he's the "villain"). The movie feels more about the storm than the characters, but the performances are the fine and the storm stuff is still well-done and entertaining. The movie also had a popular song from Van Halen on the soundtrack and in the movie (Humans Being). Leonard Maltin Movie Guide Review: Twister (1996) - 3 out of 4 stars"A wild ride of a movie, dealing with storm chasers who want to learn all they can about tornadoes--by getting inside them. The plot and characterizations are best described as lame, but the special effects are so convincing, and the storms so incredible, that they carry you along (no pun intended) from one kinetic burst to another. Great fun. Written by Michael Crichton and his wife, Anne-Marie Martin. Panavision."

What I remember about this is that Crichton and or Spielberg got sued for allegedly stealing the idea and Spielberg defended on the argument that the movie was something like 70% FX and 30% story--so he was admitting the story didn't count for much.

This is still one of the best movies to test out your home sound system
And RIP Bill Paxton. One of the few times he was a lead

The story or the characters failed to grab me. So many good actors and they were wasted playing cliched characters going through predictable arcs.
De Bont's second best is the Lara Croft sequel imo. It had a few good action scenes and moments between Jolie, Hinds and Butler.
Van Halen's appeal dropped to zero for me since Sammy Hagar joined. All he does is bellow like a buffalo without any nuance. I can give a little break to numbers like "Runaround" or "Right Now" but "Humans Being" is a waste.

I watch this whenever its on, I don't even think its a great movie per se but it's, I don't know, fun. Plus, Phillip Seymour Hoffman is a lot of fun.

I really enjoy it. It’s one of the better disaster movies from the nineties.

I'm suprised they never made a sequel. Most likely will never happen now that Paxton is dead.

No, it would be the director trolling and actually be a movie about a CGI rapping shark voiced by GIlbet Godfried. Jan Debont would laugh maniacally: "And you people thought Speed 2 was the worst thing I ever did!"

I always liked the sequence when the drive in theater gets blown away playing the Shining.
I saw this at the theater, it held my interest. I still enjoy it and like Paxton as the lead. Cary Elwes is good as the rival storm chaser.
Have to agree about post David Lee Roth Van Halen. I never could stand Hagar.

I saw this in theaters in 1996. A fun blockbuster with great CGI and sound design. The story is straight forward and nicely done.
Bill Paxton gives a decent performance as Bill Harding. Paxton is underrated as a leading man and gives such a charismatic performance in this movie.
This back when "event" movies were a thing. Blockbusters used to be special, the kind they don't make anymore.

Why does the twister at the beginning of the movie growl like a tiger? Tornadoes sound like freight trains, not big cats.
