The final result remains one of cinema’s best directed horror films. If Kubrick took the job, probably get something excellent while obviously different. I suspect he may have axed the scenes in Iraq or have a set built in England.

Thank god he didn't direct it.
The end result would have been a painfully dull, self-indulgent, pretentious crap.
Friedkin was the best choice.

Not a bad choice although I don't know if the way he would've directed the possession scenes would be as disturbing.

Perhaps it would have been more surreal. Like the third act of the Shining when the Overlook is going mad.

Maybe Kubrick would've worked in Joe Turkel and a Georgetown bar.

Father Merrin would have yelled, "What's your major malfunction, numbnuts?" at Pazuzu and then it would have replied, "Me so horny, me love you long time."

Did William Peter Blatty say something about it? I doubt Kubrick would have tolerated Blatty's involvement and vice versa.
Why is it now, like decades later, all these Kubrick tales are coming out. Were they kept in a vault until now?

Were they kept in a vault until now? In the documentary Leap of Faith, Friedkin mentions it was turned down by Kubrick, Arthur Penn, and Mike Nichols.

I remember this was mentioned in the 1998 book Easy Riders, Raging Bulls. I think it said that Peter Bogdanovich also rejected it.

Might have been an interesting take on the material. Wonder if he would have done the angiography scene?

"That was me, that is Pazuzu, and my three spawns. There I was in the Hell Peasoup Bar getting ready to perform a bit of the old in out in out with a crucifix."
"The power of Christ compells you!" "Your mother sucks golfballs through gardenhoses!"
*Karrus jumps out a window with Pazuzu's spirit* "I was exorcized, all right.'

I like you, Lankester. I always liked you. You were always the best of them. Best goddamned exorcist from Timbuktu to Portland, Maine.

I'm glad he did as William Friedkin was the ideal director for this project. Plus, we got to see Stanley Kubrick tackle horror with 'The Shining' (1980).
