There’s a voice that both Jon Stewart and David Letterman would do randomly on their shows, almost nightly. I’ve always wondered who it’s supposed to be. I assumed Carson, but their Carson impressions are very different. Then I thought Jerry Lewis? Internet searches seem to think it’s maybe Jackie Gleason, but I can’t get a clear answer
This Dana Carvey podcast is the most recent time I’ve heard it and I can’t find an online clip of Stewart or Letterman doing it...
At exactly 58:48 he says something like “Oh no. Therapy much.” And goes on for a few more lines in the voice.

Carson--it's a voice he would do sometimes on his show. It's Carson doing that impression he did. Sounds like Art Fern--if you watch one of those skits he did with the Matinee Lady--that's what the Carson voice sounds like.

Ah. I got the ArtFern result too from searching but supposedly that character was an homage to Gleason. I’m out of my element here since I was too young to watch Carson and know basically nothing about Gleason.

Sounds like Carson to me. Carvey actually does a Carson impression in this same podcast though and it sounds totally different.

Carvey actually does a Carson impression in this same podcast though and it sounds totally different. Carson's natural voice is not Art Fern's. It is also far more likely that Carvey is thinking of Art Fern because he was known for making innuendo remarks like that situation they were talking about. Gleason's best known character was the Honeymooners and he sounds completely different. I find it unlikely Carvey was referencing a forgotten Gleason character.
Reginald Gleason the Third? I wasn't familiar with it. Gleason is mostly associated with Honeymooners and Smokey and the Bandit.

Many of Johnny Carson's mannerisms and characters were warmed-over bits from other comedians. The Art Fern voice and facial expressions were swiped from Jackie Gleason's smarmy Reginald Van Gleason character (if you see old clips of Gleason playing this character, it's an obvious steal). Jack Benny's onstage mannerisms were echoed in Carson's. Jonathan Winters' crotchety elderly woman, Maude Frickert, was remarkably similar to Carson's "Aunt Blabby." Steve Allen's "Answer Man" was the forerunner of "Carnac the Magnificent." The opening monologue was a staple of Jack Paar. Carson began doing a takeoff of "60 Minutes"'s Andy Rooney after Joe Piscopo did Rooney on SNL; IIRC, Carson parodied Mister Rogers only after Dan Aykroyd spoofed him on SNL. There was very little originality about Carson.
