Any fans of "Top Gun" starring Tom Cruise? How has it held up after 35 years?
Top Gun isn't considered one of the best films ever made, and there are plenty of 80's films held in higher regard over it, but yet when anniversaries like these come along, the movie gets high praise. The movie has its own charm that has apparently made it endearing over the years to many people. It's an entertaining film although it's certainly a product of its time and people make fun of it for having unintentional gay overtones to it. But the movie has Tom Cruise's charisma and intense aerial flying and combat footage. Danger Zone by Kenny Loggins is also a fun theme song for the movie. I got to see this film for the first time in many years a few years ago. Should be interesting how the sequel turns out when it finally comes out in November.
-Inducted into the National Film Registry in 2015. -Highest-grossing film of 1986.
Leonard Maltin Movie Guide Review:
Top Gun (1986) - 2.5 out of 4 stars
"Young studs vie for glory, on the ground and in the air, at elite naval aviation training school. Contrived beyond belief, with dogfights that play like video games, and total lack of sexual chemistry between the two leads...but slickly calculated to please '80's audiences (and fans of the ever-smiling Cruise). Edwards, as Cruise's sidekick, steals the show. Giorgio Moroder and Tom Whitlock won an Oscar for the song "Take My Breath Away," performed by Berlin. Super 35."

The fighter planes sequences are cool and I like the soundtrack. Boring plot though. Not a personal fav.

I first saw it aboard a US Navy base, with an audience full of sailors going through Avionics training.
They howled with laughter throughout. ("MiG-28"; no ECM or chaff, etc.)

Vacuous.
Wasn't there a sequel planned? Is that already out?
Oh I see it's later this year.

Great visuals (including Kelly McGillis) but pretty silly - 6/10.
A friend went though Top Gun in the 80s. He said every navy fighter pilot goes through it, not just the best as the film says. Furthermore, he said he learned very little there.
The school was in Nevada, not California, and he got to fly his Tomcat 100 feet off the Death Valley floor – at 800 knots per hour. By the by, that means he broke the sound barrier while flying below sea level!

I never cared for the romance in the film but the in flight shots of the F14s was amazing. The shots from the carrier deck was really amazing as well. I saw this at the theater with my Dad and brother. I remember when it came out on video the electronic stores would use footage of this to showcase their laserdisc players, and televisions sets, especially the projection TVs. Thinking about it I’m sure it looked pretty bad in hindsight compared to what we have now, but back then it seemed pretty awesome having all those TVs displaying the Tomcats.
Another aspect of this film that is probably forgotten or at least not well remembered anymore was the amount of clothing and accessories that became super popular after the film came out. I remember tons of department stores having flight jackets with all these semi realistic patches on them and aviator sunglasses. I had one of those jackets, with what looked like an authentic squadron patch on it, a fake Top Gun school patch on it and a few others. I guess it was pretty cool for a 10 or 11 year old. I know my friends thought it was cool.
Overall the film got a 8/10 for my pre teen self, but nowadays probably a 8/10 for the action scenes and a 6/10 for the film overall.

It's just a fun slice of jingoistic '80s cheese. The flying scenes are exciting.

stylishly shot, great soundtrack, great cast with Cruise giving his starmaking role, and amazing aerial footage. We really took the whole "do it for real" aspect of filmmaking for granted

An 80s classic. Great action scenes and soundtrack, Cruise at his grinning best and just great 80s atomsphere.
Top Gun is such a cool movie.

It's alright. Couldn't really get into the flying bits though.

Great film back then... and still fun to watch now!
7.5/10
Looking forward to seeing the sequel that is coming out soon...
Maverick and Iceman are back!
This time flying F-18s...
It should be interesting to see how the two great pilots are still keeping themselves relevant in today's world of drones...

Not a huge fan of it, but it’s entertaining. Cruise does much more for a cool action scene now.

Big, dumb, cheesy movie, with a bigger, dumber, cheesier soundtrack..."Highway to the Danger Zone"...

It certainly hasn’t aged well but it was entertaining at the time. I had it on laser disc and the flight sequences were great. This was in my regular rotation back when I managed video stores. I never bought him and Kelly McGillis as a couple. Now when I watch it it just seems like a recruiting tool for the Navy. Also just one in a string of Tom Cruise movies where his character had daddy issues.

One of those films that I'm weirdly proud to say I've never seen. I'm like that sometimes when things get a little "too" popular.
God, in the 80's, that film was so huge, and started many trends, so I chose not to see it. And I doubt I ever will.
