what could have been a standard legal thriller is made memorable by terrific acting including an amazing debut performance from Edward Norton and an iconic twist that you probably have seen listed in many "most shocking movie twists" lists. Most of the praise goes to Norton but Richard Gere is also very good here as well and the film is just very well scripted. shot. and engaging from beginning to end. Interestingly these kind of courtroom thrillers seemed to have died out. Guess the numerous Law & Order type shows kind of put an end to them and they found a new home on TV. Also, Frances McDormand is here as a psychologist the same year she won the Oscar for Fargo and Laura Linney has a sexy quality to her I never noticed before

Solid movie, but Laura Linney really got on my nerves. There is generally something about her acting that I find very annoying. I almost wish Norton would've strangled her for real.

Only seen it once, but I thought it was very good. I really liked the story and Norton is fantastic. Gere and Linney are quite good too.

Nortons final scene, and the twist, makes the whole movie IMO. It puts a memorable cap on an otherwise good, but not necessarily brilliant film. And Gere is always good as these morally objectionable guys. Nobody does that better than him and Michael Douglas.

It is indeed a fantastic legal drama. Out of all the Richard Gere performances I've seen, I think this one is his best. But of course the best acting in the movie is from Edward Norton by far. It was a very challenging role and he handled it beautifully.

This movie is basically the Ed Norton show. Such a brilliant performance given by a young actor in his debut role. The twist reveal is awesome.
The same year Norton gave another terrific performance in The People Vs Larry Flynt.
