Released 20 years ago this month. Yeah, it’s not very good. The dynamic duo of Bay and Bruckheimer were not the right team for a historical drama. It at least looks and sounds great. A director’s cut was released with some more explicit violence.

I always liked it even though it was pretty cheesy. Especially the fact that Ben Afflecks character would go from Eagle Squadron to Pearl Harbor to Doolittles Raiders. Yeah he was a hot shot pilot in a P40 fighter but I doubt they’d put him on a B25 bomber in which he had zero flight time in. The actual attack sequence was well done on Pearl, it almost was like being there. I remember in the early days of bluray it was one of the reference quality discs to show off the new tech. Tora Tora Tora is still the definitive Pearl Harbor film.

It's not a good film but I don't hate it as much as I used to. I get that it was made as a Titanic cash-in but there was no need for it to be three hours long. The three leads are kind of annoying. The key attack sequence is very well done with exceptional visual effects. And some of the supporting cast I did like, particularly Cuba Gooding Jr. Why wasn't he the main character?

I re-watched it last year, for the first time since seeing it on the big screen when it came out.
Other than the spectacular sequence of the Japanese attack, it is not a very good movie.

It lost me when hotshot pilot Affleck proclaims:
"Just get me up in a plane!"
(yep -- then the attack will soon be over)

I've always felt there was a much better film in there if you rearranged some scenes, cut out a few, and reworked it into a straight up war movie.

One of the goofs is the use of "Army Air Corps," though that name was dropped several months before the attack and "United States Army Air Forces" was adopted"

Never seen it, but I know it was trying to duplicate the success of Titanic with its love story, length, etc.

I miss you more then Michael Bay missed the mark When he made Pearl Harbor I miss you more than that movie missed the point And that’s an awful lot girl And now, now you’ve gone away And all I’m trying to say is Pearl Harbor sucked, and I miss you I need u like Ben Affleck needs acting school He was terrible in that film I need u like Cuba Gooding needed a bigger part He’s way better than Ben Affleck And now all I can think about is your smile and that sh*tty movie too Pearl Harbor sucked and I miss you Why does Michael Bay get to keep on making movies? I guess Pearl Harbor sucked Just a little bit more than I miss you

It wanted so badly to be Saving Private Ryan has sex with Titanic.
Needless to say, it's serviceable enough yet also forgettable enough.

They could had trimmed down the bloat by cutting both Hartnett and Affleck from the movie and make it from Gooding’s perspective. He already did a Naval drama the year prior with Men of Honor.

I've always felt there was a much better film in there if you rearranged some scenes, cut out a few, and reworked it into a straight up war movie. Yeah, it's weird they tried to model it after Titanic instead of something else like Saving Private Ryan. I would say it is because of Shakespeare in Love winning Best Picture over Saving Private Ryan. Harvey Weinstein pulled every trick in the book to get Academy voters to choose Shakespeare in Love over Saving Private Ryan for the award, going as far as to talk about how brutal various sequences were for Saving Private Ryan, that Best Picture should probably go with the more universally appealing film, etc. And in the end those efforts worked and Shakespeare In Love took home the gold that night. It comes as no surprise that Disney, which owned Miramax as well as Dimension Films at that point, wanted to see if they could combine the impact of both stories into one package and offered the female lead to Gwyneth Paltrow, who in turn got her then boyfriend Ben Affleck to sign on opposite of her. I would be curious what Ben Affleck would have done if he were directing such a film these days himself, and what Michael Bay would've approached it like if the romantic angle wasn't so set either, maybe like a 13 Hours? Not considered a great and outstanding movie either, but took its subject matter more seriously and didn't hold back on content.

Even the worst South Park gag has layers upon layers.
