You just know he wanted Superman. He's probably got a list of dream IP's and he's just checking them off as he goes.
Mission Impossible, check. Star Trek, check. Star Wars, check. Superm...er Green Lantern, check.

Getting J.J. Abrams to direct a big IP movie would be asking for trouble at this point.

He's a strong visual director. It's the story where he tends to screw up. A good script not overseen by Abrams himself is what's needed.

I've never been too impressed by Abrams as a director, a lot of his technique over relies on hand held to shaky camera, pushing in on tilts, and over filling the screen with lens flare to make it seem more exciting to the eye.

The lens flares bother me as well, but he toned it right down in The Force Awakens. A huge improvement on his Star Trek work.

Each Star Trek film has its own unique directorial style, complete with look and musical score. The big-screen Star Wars Episodes all follow the audio and visual template that George Lucas established in 1977. JJA could put his own unique spin on a separate Star Wars Story movie.

JJA best stay away from DC or Marvel comic book movies.
He ruined Star Trek.
His Star Wars movies were good only because he brought back the original cast and had to follow Disney's mandate of following George Lucas's audio and visual style.
