I actually never got the hate for the films. They aren’t fine art at all but are fun films. I didn’t care much for the last one as it seemed they were getting more and more ridiculous and Charlize Theron was horribly miscast but the first 4 or 5 were just lots of fun. I like the first one especially, it’s Point Blank with cars but having always loved cars it’s a natural for me (especially the black Dodge Charger). It’s a little nostalgia for me as well as at the time I was a dumb 20something and some of my friends were into the import tuning thing. I was more into classic American cars but it was still a scene I was around. Sure the 1/4 mile drags into more than a few miles in the film and the whole NOS thing is pretty funny but the main cast has a lot of charisma even though none of them are great actors. Good God how the fuck is Charlize Theron miscast? Explain to me as if you're a teacher how playing a super terrorist is unsuitable for one of the sexiest actresses of all time without making an absolute fool of yourself. 1. She's not believable as some super hot bad a$$ hacker that is also accomplished at beating up dudes 3 times her size. 2. She looks like she watched the Nicholas Cage version of Gone in 60 Seconds and channeled Angelina Jolie with her funky dread style hair do when she's first introduced. It looks like that's about all she did to prep for this film. 3. She was dialing it in most of the film. Ah, I'm a nihilistic super hacker and Dom owes me. She didn't put anything into her character. They could have got some no name actress that is as good looking as Theron that might have at least tried. That's about all I got.

I can sort of get what where you are coming from, but I find her as effective as she needs to be for the movie she is in. In fact, she is easily the best aspect of the movie. I believed her as the character. I don't think she was phoning it in. She looked like she was having fun to me. She is my favorite villain performance of the entire franchise in fact. Better than her performance in The Old Guard, which I do think she was phoning it in in.

She didn't need to beat anyone up she literally had a plane full of henchman and a hostage. The hairstyle is meh. But to say Charlize was miscast is very weird and I'm used to weird on forums like this but yours was pet semetry weird.

I don’t know if I can say I’m a “fan” of the franchise, but much like Marvel I appreciate what they’ve built. They took this little street racing movie from the early 2000’s and turned it into this huge box office franchise. That’s not an easy thing to do. The fact they are now on their 9th film is pretty impressive.

I only saw the first one. That was enough for me.

Since when are Fast & Furious movies critical darlings? Honestly, after some shaky starts, I think it’s a franchise that’s mostly gotten better. The movies are dumb, but there’s a place for that and we don’t get much like them these days. Also, I find your stance on them to be more childish than these movies ever could be. Most of the films have a "fresh" rating on RT. While they certainly don't have the unanimously positive rating of actual good movies, they have a strong contingent of favorable critics who give the movies good ratings even while admitting they're stupid.

...I would say that the producers and directors don't much care about quality and don't put much effort into making a decent entertainment. On them not caring about quality, as I mentioned in my original post, I remember with one movie they were literally bragging that they finished the script in a weekend.

Never seen any of the films, but at least they seem like they know they're dumb-but-entertaining action movies. This is a defense many favorable critics use: they KNOW they're making dumb movies, so it's okay if they're dumb. Not only do I not agree with that argument, but I think they actually think they're making great cinema. Vin Diesel has shared pictures online of the package they sent out for Academy Awards consideration, and you can find interviews with actors going deep into their character motivations. Maybe the writers are winking, but the cast and at least one producer (i.e. Diesel) are deadly serious.

I have never seen any of them except Tokyo Drift (which I didn’t like much).
I can’t really comment on them for that reason, but it is odd to see critics seemingly bend over backwards to defend these as “light, meaningless entertainment” and then become harsh critics for other franchises.

I like watching Double Toasted reviews (they have a Twitch channel and a YouTube channel), but for the most part they've been part of the "It's dumb, but you can't judge it like other movies" club. To be fair, on a few occasions, one of the group has called out others for giving bad ratings to other movies for doing the same things they give the F&F movies a pass for.
