1992 thriller about Bridget Fonda's new roomate played by Jennifer Jason Leigh developing a sexual attraction and obsession with her. After the success of Fatal Attraction these type of "sexual thrillers" became all the rage with Single White Female coming out the same year as The Hand that Rocks the Cradle and Basic Instinct. Single White Female bears a striking resemblance to The Hand That Rocks the Cradle with a bit of Fatal Attraction throwed in. The film benefits from the strong performances of its leads and some good directing and cinematography. The film features plenty of full frontal nudity with both lead actresses including a moment where Jennifer Jason Leigh is masturbating so if you need to get your dick hard this movie is a good choice. Movie has some lame death scenes though including where one character is stabbed in the eye with a high heel shoe and somehow immediately just drops dead and Leigh getting lamely stabbed twice in an anti climax making you think she's going to get up again. These days these type of films seem relegated to the Lifetime Network. Worth a viewing

Jennifer Jason Leigh's performance is the only reason to watch it and even her performance is only convincing up to a point. That kind of sums up the whole movie actually, everything is only convincing up to a point and then it all gets a bit too ridiculous. It feels like a wannabe Brian DePalma movie, but is unable to pull it off. Not sure why either, since the same director directed the clever and very well acted Reversal of Fortune 2 years before.
5.5/10

I enjoyed it, but I’m partial to thrillers.

one character is stabbed in the eye with a high heel shoe Considering the character realized who was giving him oral sex and still let her continue and finish , he was a bit of a heel himself.

I mean the deaths were just badly staged. Tye dude gets stabbed once in the eye and then immediately drops dead? You would expect her to stab him a few more times. Then at the Jennifer Jason Leigh dies from two screwdriver stabs to the back? I was expecting her to get thrown into the furnace fire or something

Saw this when it first came out, not much to recommend it in my opinion. It’s an okay way to waste some time but I wouldn’t go out of my way to watch it. I remember there was a sort of remake it called the Roommate with a small part played with Billy Zane that came out in ‘11. It was pretty weak as well but I remember Zane being decent.

Two beautiful women in their prime doing some nudity. Only reason to watch this, unfortunately.

There was a slew of stalker movies about that time, most about the same value and rating from me – all pretty low. For example:
Pacific Heights (1991) Tha Babysitter (1995) Cape Fear (1991) The Hand That Rocks The Cradle (1992)
And, of course, the porn version: Single White Nympho

I've seen this movie so many times I think I know the script inside out. I find the relationship at its centre really sad. Nice supporting cast too, including Stephen Tobolowsky in prime form. It's beautifully shot by the great Luciano Tovoli, with music by Howard Shore. I like the location, the apartment and the clothing.
With regard for "the rage" you mention, I recall there were certain trends in American crime cinema at the time, and a lot of directors came from around the globe to participate; this was pre-multiplex, back when a lot of movies playing at cinemas were adult-orientated. For anybody that likes this movie, I recommend Curtis Hanson's run of crime movies from around the time of release - 'The Bedroom Window' (1987), 'Bad Influence' (1990), 'The Hand That Rocks The Cradle' (1992), 'The River Wild' (1994). Also, David DeCoteau's 'American Crime' trilogy - 'American Rampage' (1989), 'Deadly Embrace' (1989) and 'Murder Weapon' (1989).
Adrian Lyne's 'Fatal Attraction' (1987), Joseph Ruben's 'The Stepfather' (1987), Matthew Patrick's 'Hider In The House' (1987), Kathryn Bigelow's 'Blue Steel' (1990), Mike Figgis' 'Internal Affairs' (1990), John Schlesinger's 'Pacific Heights' (1990), Martin Scorsese's remake 'Cape Fear' (1991), Wes Craven's 'The People Under The Stairs' (1991), Paul Verhoeven's 'Basic Instinct' (1992), Jonathan Kaplan's 'Unlawful Entry' (1992), Uli Edel's 'Body Of Evidence' (1993), Alan Shapiro's 'The Crush' (1993), Nicholas Kazan's 'Dream Lover' (1993), Harold Becker's 'Malice' (1993), Tom Holland's 'The Temp' (1993), Barry Levinson's 'Disclosure' (1994), Guy Ferland's 'The Babysitter' (1995), William Friedkin's 'Jade' (1995), Wesley Strick's 'The Tie That Binds' (1995), John Schlesinger's 'Eye For An Eye' (1996) and Tony Scott's 'The Fan' (1996) were among the movies I once watched during a marathon session I put together, concerning how terror moves from the police department and legal institutions into public arenas, the home, the workplace and holiday retreats. For me, the 1990s was one of the greatest decades for home invasion / stalker thrillers to date. At the time, people were terrified to leave their own homes ... yet scared to stay inside them.
