I will adjust the title as I watch the other disc's.
There are 2 dvds in this set & I do have Volume 2 as well.
This gets us through Episode 7
It's subtitled Japanese audio. Akira Ishida is great as Break.
So, the ANN summary
Ayako Kawasumi as Alice
Junko Minagawa as Oz Vessalius
Azuma Sakamoto as Gilbert
Kousuke Toriumi as Raven
Akira Ishida as Xerxes Break
Kana Hanazawa as Sharon Rainsworth
Ryoka Yuzuki as Rabbit
Ryou Hirohashi as Echo/Zwei
Harumi Sakurai as Dledum
Hideyuki Umezu as Oscar Vessalius
Kaori Fukuhara as Ada Vessalius
Daisuke Ono as Jack Vessalius
We haven't officially had Jack named, but he's been in a couple eps here & there.
So...
The summary doesn't quite make it.
The DVD pitches the story as the unsolved for 100 yrs the Tragedy of Sablier.
We open on the coming of age ceremony being planned for 15 yr old Oz Vessalius. He has been brought to a recently renovated mansion by his uncle Oscar, but being a 15 yr old, Oz wants to explore rather than practice the ceremony so he, his servant Gilbert, & Oz's sister Ada escape the staff to explore, finding a mysterious grave with a pocket watch draped on the cross. Oz snatches it, opens it with sets off a dream of a girl promising to kill him.
There are 4 great families involved
Vessalius
Rainsworth
Nightray
Barma
The Silent Clock in the chapel has a legend attached to it. Of course the ceremony sets the wheels in motion. When Oz vows to carry out his duties as a Vessalius, the hooded types who have been circling the event descend, with one reciting
"When the awaited alights the Promised Land, the bell shall break its silence" which it does having been silent for 100 yrs.
Dledum has possessed Gilbert, making him stab Oz in the chest. "The blade of a friend glitters, stained red. The drops shall carve a path to the other lands. The time of Judgement is owned. The path to the Abyss shall open"
Fight ensues.
The girl who threatened Oz in the first ep shows up, declares he is hers, the "reapers" as she names then, cannot have him while they refer to her as B-Rabbit. In the fight, Oz tries to save his friend Gilbert who dives in the way & gets slashed against the chest leading to Oz suffering the judgement of being dropped into the Abyss.
Episode 3 opens in the Abyss (obviously meant to be this story's Wonderland) which looks like something out of the Twilight Zone with floating toys & objects like tilted doors scattered throughout. Oz is attacked by a tattered doll which refers to him as a "tasty young child" only for a larger toy to take over the chase, but B Rabbit, the Blood Soaked Black Rabbit, arrives to save him, desiring him to form a contract with her so she can return to the real world where her memories are. Others call her B-Rabbit, but her name is Alice
Things born in the Abyss are chains, though Alice refers to the ones she saved Oz from as Trumps which are weaker chains. To get out of Abyss, chains must form a contract which is something of a possession situation
Contract sealed, they make it to the real world where they are promptly located by Sharon Rainsworth, her servant Xerxes Break, & a man known as Raven.
(Raven is a chain. Break has hair covering one eye at all times & a talking stuffed doll on his shoulder named Emily. These play a part later)
Raven seals Alice into a human form which protects Oz as the contract makes a mark on the human which, once it makes a full clock rotation, drops the contractor into the darkest pits of the Abyss. Episode 5 deals with this to set up the threat that awaits Oz.
Episode 6 returns Oz to the mansion of his coming of age ceremony which is in serious disrepair. This is where we learn Abyss time is not normal time so what was just a brief time for Oz in the Abyss was 10 yrs in the real world & Raven is his friend Gilbert who is now an adult while Oz is still 15. He was adopted by the Nightray family after Oz vanished so he feels he betrayed Oz as the Nightrays are sworn enemies of the Vessalius dukedom, but all Oz asks for is his continued loyalty which Gilbert once more swears.
If you are already confused, quit now. It just gets more layered further on.
The dream in the first episode isn't Oz & Alice, but we will later learn it is Oz's ancestor Jack who is at the core of the Tragedy of Sablier.
This is another excuse for characters to traipse around in Victorian style & solve mysteries.
This ran in Square Enix's Monthly GFantasy which also ran Black Butler, Switch, Saiyuki & Zombie-Loan. It's shonen with an eye to the female readers. Saiyuki is one of my top fav anime & Manga.
So far I put this around 8 or B, but it might make higher depending on where we go in the next 3 dvds.
