I've heard some people call this Scorsese's worst film, would you agree?
It's better to me than something like New York, New York or Boxcar Bertha but it doesn't come remotely close to its predecessor.

Probably a minority opinion but I think it's one of Scorsese's best and better than the first one.
This movie simply oozes cool. I like the gritty cinematography, it gives the movie a cool vibe. Add to that Newman and Cruise, two of the coolest actors of all time and energetic direction from Scorsese, sharp script and a great soundtrack and score.

But Color of Money is one of his most different movies, and because of that I think it gets a worse rap than his crime movies. He gets great performances out of Newman and Cruise. Its great stuff.

Definitely not his worst in my book.
I actually really like it and would only put it barely below The Hustler.

Some people give it a negative review because the movie is the closest thing to Scorsese working as a director-for-hire.
IMDB The Color of Money Trivia:
"Martin Scorsese has said he mainly did this at the insistence of Paul Newman and to prove that he could make a mainstream studio picture that would be finished on time and under budget. He felt that, despite his minimal input, that it was not a personal picture and he was more or less a "hired gun" on this."

Siskel and Ebert gave The Color of Money two thumbs down. A rarity for a Scorsese movie they've reviewed.

Leonard Maltin Movie Guide Review:
The Color of Money (1986) - 3 out of 4 stars
"Sharply made, nicely textured sequel to THE HUSTLER, with Newman's Fast Eddie Felson finding a younger, greener version of himself in small-time pool hotshot Cruise, whom he decides to promote for another shot at the big time. Hardboiled script by Richard Price, flashy direction by Scorsese, flamboyant camerawork by Michael Ballhaus, and top-notch performances by Cruise and especially Newman make this a must-see...though film's second half is protracted and disappointing, with a hoped-for-climax that never occurs. Newman finally picked up an Academy Award for his fine work here."

Well yes, but that was a first for him around the time of The Color of Money. IMDB Cape Fear (1991) trivia: "Steven Spielberg was originally set to direct. He later recommended Martin Scorsese for the job and personally called Scorsese, letting him know that this was a commercial film that had potential to be a hit, which would exercise more power for Scorsese to make his films." "Martin Scorsese directed the film as part of a two picture deal with Universal Pictures, because of their help and support with the release of The Last Temptation of Christ (1988). The other movie in the deal was Casino (1995)."
