Watching Cobra is like watching a Death Wish sequel starring Charles Bronson. You know you're not getting Oscar-caliber material, but what you are getting is an entertaining action B-movie as long as you're not too demanding. Very few people will list Cobra among writer/star Sylvester Stallone's best films, but if they go into watching this with their brain checked at the door, they can find something fun from Stallone. The movie has even become something of a cult classic over the years. Whatever faults the movie has in terms of story, character, etc., they can find strengths in a menacing villain in Brian Thompson and finely-executed action scenes from director George Cosmatos. What's surprising about this action film is how much of a slasher film it can be at times like when Brian Thompson tries to kill Brigitte Nielsen at the hospital. You also have a decent group of character actors populating the film like Art LaFleur, Reni Santoni, and Andrew Robinson.
Leonard Maltin Movie Guide Review:
Cobra (1986) - 1.5 out of 4 stars
"Once more, Stallone wraps himself in the American flag and fights for the greater glory of mankind by going after criminal vermin; this time, he's a cop. Typical low-grade action fare, where all the other cops are stubborn dummies, and all the bad guys are repellent creeps. Some good action sequences."

Fun movie. I like that it had this kind of slasher movie vibe that gave it a different feel than some other action flicks. Nice moody cinematography as well. Fun fact, this movie was originally 2 hours before being chopped up into quick 87 minutes

Apparently there is an unedited version that retained 30,40 minutes of footage that was trimmed to avoid a X-rating. Wonder what that’s like.

Probably best enjoyed ironically. Stallone does have a pretty badass entrance at the grocery store. As this was released during the apex of his ego (after Rocky IV and Rambo II) I read that the crew and supporting cast were forbidden to speak with him. Brigitte Nielsen also enjoys fries with her ketchup. Seriously, she fuckin' drown 'em in that shit. Then there is the Night Slasher, pig! He suffers one of the more brutal kills in a Stallone movie with being hung up on a hook then guided into a blast furnace.

Easily my favorite Stallone movie. Best viewed ironically for sure, but most action movies from that era are. The movie absolutely feels like a spoof in the same way Commando does for Schwarzenegger. Both highly enjoyable movies where it's impossible to tell when the comedy is intentional or unintentional.

Stallone appears to be trying too hard to project cool in this one.

The message of this film is: Pepsi is for winners, Coca-Cola is for losers.
I don't know if there is a term for it--homage casting? Where you bring actors from a film that obviously inspired it like in Robocop they have Felton Perry (Magnum Force/Walking Tall) and this has two familiar faces from Dirty Harry.
"I'm going to blow it up man!"
"Go ahead. I don't shop here."
