It's not as bad as all the negative reviews.
Is this movie great? No. It's typical of most sci-fi movies. The Hollywood formula for movies like this is bad science, an illogical plot, and over acting. Matter of fact, most thrillers and horror movies use the same formula.
One purpose of fictional drama is to portray emotion, and get the viewer to feel what the actors (especially the protagonists) are feeling. So instead of the strong, courageous, effective, silent and stoic hero --- we get the over emotional, super demonstrative bumbling nincompoop. And that is what we have here.
Kitai (Jaden Smith) is anything but a courageous and effective soldier. He's a childish and incompetent idiot. And he's extremely demonstrative (over acting). He wears his emotions on his sleeve. He cries, has temper tantrums, and flips out in the presence of any threat.
Hollywood feels most people do not want to see an outer space mission that goes well, with astronauts that know what they are doing, and perform with clear heads and courage.
So instead we get movies with incompetent morons causing problems by making stupid mistakes, and then struggling all movie long trying to get it right while acting like over emotional basket cases.
This is the end result of "giving the people what they want". The target audience for Hollywood movies, TV shows and the music industry is teenagers and twenty somethings. These are the groups that spend the most money on these types of entertainment. Most of the members of these two groups don't know enough, or care about science or logic to watch a movie about a space mission going to plan with competent astronauts. These are the same people who like a horror movie to scare them. And they don't care how stupid or foolish the victims are. Same thing with thrillers. They don't know much about crime, punishment, the law, or even the physics of violence. But they do want to be emotionally entertained by feeling fear, anger, sympathy, empathy, sadness, etc. Maybe as they age, they will acquire more knowledge and understanding. But by then, they are no longer the target audience of Hollywood.
The basic premise, the cinematography, the scenery, the special effects, and even the acting of this movie are not bad. Jaden Smith was portraying the role of the architypical protagonist of most sci-fi, dramatic thriller or horror movies these days --- the over emotional and incompetent nincompoop. The science, the logic and the super demonstrative protagonist --- although I think it stinks by design --- was terrible. But this is typical of most sci-fi, thrillers and horror movies I see.
In my opinion, this movie is not a 1, a 2, or a 3. It's at least a 4, 5, or 6 depending on your personal enjoyment. (But no, it's not a 7, 8, 9 or 10 either.) Unfortunately it's pretty average by today's standards. I gave it a 5 out of 10 rating.
Did you see it?
What do you think?

When you can't make a movie about a monster chasing after Will Smith's son interesting then you need to reevaluate things.

Basically a vanity project for the Smith family with Shyamalan working as a hired hand.

The problem with the movie isn't the story, it is the way it is put into film. The acting is the main problem. Jaden Smith is unbearable as the main character and that is the movie's ultimate downfall. For a movie directed by M. Night Shyamalan, it very much lacks emotional impact, thrills, suspense or entertainment value. What is left is a frustrating, unlikable and annoying movie with a good idea at it's core and some neat visuals. The fact that the movie was seemingly made as a vehicle for Will Smith's son makes it all the more difficult to tolerate. It's definitely a step up from The Last Airbender though.
4.5/10

Movie was just boring. Also I noticed something with the movie. I donβt know what accent it was supposed to be, but Will Smith and Jaden had an accent at one point and then completely dropped it I think.

A film with a similar theme, and despite the limited acting abilities of Kevin Sorbo, a more watchable film.

Not as bad as I thought: 4/10.
But like in Quiet Place, this apex predator made no sense, especially against a highly advanced human civilization.
On top, both are easy to manipulate and without vision rather weak predator.
In nature next to every hunting predator depends on good vision.

And most characters portrayed in most sci-fi, dramas, or horror movies these days. They are all extremely over acted, demonstrable, ninnies who can't handle any threat, challenge or danger. Hollywood doesn't think most viewers want to see the strong, silent, stoic heros anymore. They think the viewers want to see over emotional, demonstrative, incompetent nincompoops. And that was the character portrayed by Jaden Smith. And most characters in most sci-fi, drama and/or horror movies these days.

It has nothing to do with overacting or underacting. His acting is like watching paint dry. For a movie where we are spending much of it just watching one actor, you need an actor that is going to pull you into their situation. Someone with charisma and someone who is able to capture all the emotions convincing and allow for the audience to want to see the character survive. He fails in every regard. I would have enjoyed seeing his character be eaten.

I usually don't care if they live or die.

That's quite a gift though of a $130 million sci-fi film for Will Smith to give to his son.

According to Wikipedia:
"In a 2015 interview with Esquire, Smith called the film "the most painful failure" of his career and expressed regret at leading his son into the production. He also unfavorably compared the experience to Wild Wild West, which also underperformed expectations at the box office."
IMDB After Earth Trivia:
"Although not credited on the finished film, co-writer/producer Will Smith was responsible for much of the movie's direction. While M. Night Shyamalan was primarily in charge of the blocking (composition of shots, placement of the camera) and the visual aspects of the film (color and design), it was Will Smith who personally coached Jaden Smith in his performance and dictated the development of the story and the on-screen action. After both the story and acting were heavily criticized, Shyamalan decided to take the blame."
"In a 2019 lecture at NYU's Stern School of Business, Shyamalan publicly disowned his films The Last Airbender (2010) and After Earth (2013), calling them "junk movies." He added: "I did a couple huge, big-budget CGI movies. There has always been this inexorable pull to join the group; a constant seduction in the form of whatever you want to tally, in the form of money, or safety, ease, not getting criticized. I did these movies, and I rightfully got crushed, because they said, 'You don't believe in yourself, you don't believe in your own voice, and in you don't believe in your values.' I felt really lost. It just didn't work. There's probably something Darwinian about all this.""

Haven't seen it. I've heard it's pretty bad, and I don't doubt that considering who was behind the camera.
