There's no doubt the bar level really dropped with the input for most movies coming from a new "estate" of control freaks starting about 1965. That much can't be denied by anyone who is honest.
The control freaks included the new breed of movie critic who were installed by the mob itself, to glorify the mob as demi gods.
The result was crap being praised. Godfather trilogy, Graduate, dollar trilogy, all directed to appease the mob of control freaks. One thing all of these have in common is "zero motivation" for characters and "zero inspiration" for characters and for audience.
The bar obviously got lower. I was raised in the seventies, so this isn't a case of liking what I grew up with. In fact, the preaching of "Hollywood formula" to anyone growing up in the seventies was "preaching of hate, divisiveness, false accusations, no motivation, no inspiration, no strategy, no way to empathize with lead characters, alienation," and all of this totally contrived.
I find myself grading modern movies on a much easier scale. For example, my semi girl friend showed me a movie called BAD TRIP, a new movie. She's a bit of a dork, always having to watch the newest movie, but she's getting over that.
Any way, the movie is actually a totally professional movie. It does every single thing correct and by the book, and all the participants do their jobs admirably. The actors are exceptionally good, IMO. The person in the gorilla costume is extra ordinary. I've worn gorilla outfits before. You can't see in them, you can't breath in them, and you burn to death in them if you're anywhere North of Antarctica. This person did an outstanding job.
In execution, it would be called an outstanding movie. Attention to detail was given, and if it wasn't big budget, it was only because people with resources didn't ask for the same amount of money they would from you or I.
Even the writing was state of the art. It was exactly what is being preached, total on the street lingo, natural progression of thought.
Which was what made the crap so annoying. There was no let up. I could probably take about ten seconds of it without wanting to scream like the actors. It's just irritating.
I first rated it 3/10, because I judged it against what Art should be, and against movies made before 1965, but then I relented and rated it 5/10, because I decided it needed to be graded on a curb in a culture where hate is worshipped, and humanity is despised.
That's sad, because as I said, everyone was very good. I could see awards going to participants with no problem, but the movie as a whole was garbage. Just an annoying tirade.
Heck, compared to most movies today, I'd rate it 7/10, but overall, I have to say 5/10 against all Art of all time.
Any way, how much has the bar been lowered? Since a 3/10 movie from 1955 would be 7/10 compared to today's movies, I'm saying 4 stars out of ten.
